- You may remember last month one of our posts was about seeing chickadee nests! Well, the chicks have recently hatched!! If you maintain a nest box on your property, sometimes the chicks are so tiny, it can seem like something just stole the eggs, so be sure to take a good look if one day the eggs in the box are all gone! Chicks grow fast and usually fledge (leave the nest) within a few weeks. Another good way to tell if chicks have hatched in a nest box is if you see more activity from adults coming and going from the box. It takes a lot of foraging to feed all those hungry mouths!!

June is Invasive Species Action Month! At TFT we have been taking steps to stop invasive species as we are able on our property. From thistles to buckthorn there are plenty of actions that we can take to curb the spread of invasives. Our outside habits, like hiking, boating, or buying firewood, can also accidentally spread destructive pests. Here are four steps you can take to help keep Wisconsin wild! 🌲🦆

🥾 Brush Your Boots – Wipe seeds and pet fur off your shoes before and after hitting the trails.
🚤 Clean Your Boat – Remove mud, plants, and drain all water before leaving the boat launch.
🔥 Buy Local Firewood – Keep tree-killing beetles from traveling by burning wood within 10 miles of where you buy it.
📱 Be a Citizen Scientist – Snap photos of suspicious pests and report them using the EDDMapS app!
Let’s protect the lakes and forests we love. 💚

Our Board of Directors and participating staff took a sneak peek inside the new Outdoor Learning Center (OLC) during TFT's annual meeting on May 28th. Our board—made up of volunteer leaders from the natural resources industry—works to guide TFT’s mission. Seeing the OLC take shape is a testament to that shared vision!

➡️ The countdown is on: construction wraps up this summer, and we’re celebrating with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony at Forest Fest on July 25th at 10:00 AM. See you there!

We like to start every month showing gratitude for those who support our organization!
Trees For Tomorrow is greatly appreciative of the continued support we receive through the Foresters Fund Grant program with the Society of American Foresters. The Foresters Fund was established in 1961 to promote forestry education and enhance public understanding of forest management. This is one of many programs that makes it possible for us to carry out our mission! Thank you SAF!!!

Thoughts from Educator Beth:
A week ago I went on a short backpacking trip with my good friend and we saw the cutest little northwoods neighbor! I can't blame him for climbing fast. Two women and five dogs is a LOT to see coming down the trail towards you!
This video shows a porcupine scurrying up a tree. Many of us know that porcupines eat trees, but did you know that they only eat certain parts of the tree? Porcupines will eat young growth and leaves, but they will also feast on the thin layers of tree under the outer bark that are meant to carry water from the roots up and sugars from the tops of trees down. They do not eat the "heartwood" of trees.
My favorite fact is that these are the same parts of the trees that beavers eat! It's just that porcupines climb the tree to get it and beavers knock the tree down to gain access. Nature is fascinating!
