On March 19th, 2026, The Maverick County Sheriff Officer’s Association would like to inform the community that we recently met with representatives from CLEAT to address serious concerns regarding Maverick County employees’ insurance coverage being denied due to an apparent lack of payment by the County.

In addition, members of our Association attended today’s Commissioners Court meeting, where the County Judge stated that the County is currently working on budget amendments. He also stated that they are addressing the issue directly with those affected. However, as of this time, none of our members who have experienced these issues have been contacted.

During the meeting, he also stated that concerns about lapses in insurance coverage were “politically inclined.” We want to be clear—our intentions have been solely to seek accurate information and ensure the well-being of our members and their families.

What is most concerning is that this situation could have been resolved with a simple answer or explanation. Instead, due to a lack of communication, it escalated to the point where Maverick County employees are now being accused of engaging in political shenanigans for simply asking legitimate questions about their benefits.

Prior to taking further steps, the Chief Deputy Roberto De Leon, made multiple attempts to contact County officials via email to gain clarity on these concerns. Unfortunately, those emails went unanswered. As a result, we proceeded to meet with a CLEAT attorney, our representative and the insurance broker to better understand the situation and advocate for our members.

We remain committed to transparency, accountability, and protecting the rights and benefits of those who serve our community. We will continue to keep our members and the public informed as more information becomes available.

The Maverick County Sheriff's Office would like to acknowledge our deputies for their extra efforts to ensure our community's safety. For TWO YEARS, the Maverick County Sheriff's Office has lacked a mechanic, and our deputies have taken the following steps to guarantee community safety. Fixed their units, purchased parts for the units, and used their own vehicles. Our Sheriff Tom Schmerber thanks you for your hard work and dedication to our community.
