Have you met Arch Mrkvicka? He currently serves as the Friends of San Lucas Board President!

Arch was a co-founder and the first Executive Director of Friends of San Lucas after Fr. Greg’s passing in 2012. His connection to San Lucas began even earlier when he went on a mission trip with his daughter through St. John Neumann Church (SJN) in Eagan, MN. The following year, he began leading adult mission trips through SJN and has done so every year since.

Today happens to be his birthday!! He’s certainly someone worth celebrating, and we’re grateful for his many years of dedication to the San Lucas community.

The Mission welcomed three groups to San Lucas Tolimán in October!

During their time at the Mission, these groups worked alongside local leadership and contributed to service projects that connected them with the people, culture, and programs of San Lucas.

If you visit the Mission you can participate in activities like learning to make fresh tortillas at the Women's Center, preparing bags of food and other essentials for families in need, and taking part in guided hikes around Lake Atitlán!!

Today we celebrate All Souls Day, a time to remember and honor loved ones who have passed away. 🌼🕯️

In San Lucas, families gather in the cemetery to clean and decorate graves with flowers, candles, and the favorite foods of those who rest there. Barriletes, or kites, are also a part of the season’s customs. The flying kites can serve as a line of communication between the living and their ancestors. The colorful designs on the kites can carry messages to the spiritual world and ward off bad spirits. Through these traditions, families in San Lucas honor those who came before them and keep their memories alive within the community.

These traditions are a reflection of the deep cultural roots of San Lucas where Christian tradition and indigenous heritage shape community life. All Souls Day offers an opportunity to celebrate these connections, honor the past, and carry the memories of loved ones into future generations.

“When I arrive at my plot, I feel like I'm with the love of my life.”

For Emilio, a small-scale coffee farmer in San Lucas Tolimán, Guatemala, growing coffee is a passion, a family tradition, and a core part of his identity. While specialty coffee scoring often focuses on technical details, Emilio believes the secret ingredient in his coffee is simpler: affection.

K’aslem Jay is coming to life!🔨🎇

Exciting progress is happening at the new Mission Center, thanks to the hard work of local construction workers and contractors. Current projects include finalizing the plumbing and electrical systems, installing the wood ceiling and lighting, and finishing the kitchen as the Mission works toward completing Phase I by the end of the year.

But the impact extends far beyond the building itself. To date, the Mission has hired 70 local contractors, creating meaningful economic opportunities while drawing on the skills and expertise of the San Lucas community. Your support is making a difference well beyond the walls of K’aslem Jay!

With the Visitor Program expected to begin using K’aslem Jay in January 2027, an exciting new chapter is ahead. Thank you for helping create a space that will welcome visitors, strengthen connections, support the Mission’s work, and create opportunities for the San Lucas community for years to come.

Meet Fiona, the new Administrative and Events Coordinator for Friends of San Lucas!✨🎉

Originally from Maine, Fiona first came to Minnesota to attend Macalester College. She graduated in 2026 with degrees in Anthropology and International Studies. During her time at Macalester, Fiona spent a semester living with a host family in Cusco, Peru, and had the opportunity to conduct independent research with bilingual Quechua and Spanish speakers. The close relationships she formed in Peru inspired her to seek out future opportunities to foster cross-cultural connection.

Fiona brings several years of diverse administrative and events experience to her role. She has supported sales at a musical theatre, balanced office organization and customer service at a nature center, and coordinated a wide range of events at a behavioral health nonprofit. In her free time, she enjoys reading, spending time in nature, and thrifting additions to her DVD collection.

Today, on the third anniversary of his passing, we honor the life and legacy of Fr. John Goggin. Fr. John arrived in Guatemala in 1968 and devoted his life to serving the people of San Lucas and surrounding communities, where he performed thousands of baptisms, confirmations, weddings, and funerals. He was also instrumental in starting the Unbound program in Guatemala and faithfully supported its work for many years, connecting sponsors in the United States with families in Guatemala to support children’s education.

When Fr. John was once asked what core values most informed his ministry, he replied, “To follow the gospel and treat everyone as a child of God.” As an important pillar of the San Lucas Mission, Fr. John’s smile would always light up a room and warm the hearts of those around him. His work alongside the people of Guatemala was so that “the people can live their dignity.”

We remember Fr. John’s unwavering dedication to the people of San Lucas and the lasting impact of a life lived in service, faith, and love. His legacy continues through the lives he touched and the community he so faithfully served.

Every year, the community of San Lucas comes together to celebrate "feria," the fair honoring the town’s patron saint, St. Luke!🎉 Throughout the week, the streets come alive with parades, traditional music and dance, local food vendors, and festivities that celebrate the community’s rich culture and traditions.
