Sand Creek Massacre Foundation Our Foundation supports the educational initiatives of the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site

The Sand Creek Massacre Foundation is the non-profit partner of the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site, furthering its educational purposes and contributing to lifelong learning about the massacre. By supporting initiatives that encourage exploration of its relevance to our contemporary world, we seek to minimize the chances of similar atrocities from ever happening again. Our work honors

the legacy of those who were lost, those who seek healing, and those who continue to be affected by this and other atrocities.

In these times (and for always), it is good to see Captain Silas Soule’s courage and moral example honored in the official renaming of two place names in Larimer County. 🗺️

History can change. 🪶
History can heal. 🧡

What further action do you think should happen as we confront the legacy of the Sand Creek Massacre?

Read on in this article by The Coloradan to learn more about the renaming and how it came to be.

Larimer County's Pingree Park and Pingree Hill have been renamed Soule Park and Soule Hill, removing a name tied to the Sand Creek Massacre.

We are heartened to see John Hopper featured in this article by the Kiowa County Independent for his role in founding the Amache Preservation Society. This weekend marks the annual pilgrimage to the Amache National Historic Site led by our community partners at the Amache Alliance. We are honored to be a part of this history and healing, and wish everyone participating in this weekend’s events (including a day at the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site with SCMF board member Bobbie Hamilton) a journey of reverence, reflection, and resilience.

📰 Read The Colorado Sun's article on Captain Silas Soule's bravery in refusing orders to attack during the Sand Creek Massacre, and later formally denouncing the massacre to his superiors. The article features contributions from Sand Creek Massacre Foundation Board Member, Chris Tall Bear, and Advisory Board Member, Byron Strom, great-great nephew of Silas Soule.

This summer, Sand Creek Massacre Foundation and Rocky Mountain Land Library will co-host a Speaker Series with Nancy Niero, author of "Witness at Sand Creek, The Life and Letters of Silas Soule". Details coming soon.

The army captain's letters and testimony helped unmask efforts to hide the massacre's brutal truth behind a facade of frontier myth

“American culture is enriched when Native perspectives are acknowledged and fairly represented, especially when presented at a national monument. Erasing history is an affront to the collective progress of human culture and thought. For Indigenous peoples, this kind of erasure is also an assault on our human rights. It is the same form of discrimination and cultural genocide that we endured before and we hoped to never endure again.” - Dr Leo K Killsback, Northern Cheyenne Tribe
