Duxbury Troop 1792

Duxbury Troop 1792 On February 1, 2019, Boy Scout of America (now Scouts BSA) began offering the BSA rank advancement program to girls.

This means that girls now have an opportunity to earn Eagle Scout rank. Troop 1792 was the 3rd Scouts BSA troop to form in eastern MA.

On the 116th anniversary of Scouting America and just a few days after the 7-year anniversary of Troop 1792, we celebrate 1792's 8th, and final, Eagle Scout. Congratulations, Molly! Well done, and well deserved. It was even more special because you had TWO Scoutmasters sitting with you, both of whom are happy to have been with you on this journey. You had a great project creating opportunities to get kids outside and exploring nature!

As we hurled ourselves into summer, posting fell to the wayside . . . again. What a summer it was. Troop 1792's very firstnhigh adventure trip was to Florida SeaBase, and it is only appropriate that it is also our last. We swam with, and hugged, dolphins, caught thumb-eating tarpon, swam coral reefs that are recovering thanks to the hard work of marine scientists, and built under-water robots that sometimes did what they were supposed to and sometimes didn't (it's all about trial and error). The final major award that Scout in this troop will earn tomorrow night is the Conservation Award. In addition to all of the fun, skills development, and adventure, a Scout is helpful. We spent an entire day of our trip kayaking and exploring mangroves, which are a very important ecosystem, and then cleaning up the trash that accumulates in them and threatens their ability to thrive and survive. Well-done, Scouts. Carry it forward, and pass it on.

April showers were actually snow showers this year that resulted in the annual West Point being cancelled, but only after rain changed over to snow, collapsing canopies and tents and resulting in cold, wet Scouts. Troop 143 leaders and Troop 143 and 1792 Scouts were troopers, though, and Scouts are already talking about next year!

In addition to West Point, April brought the last District Awards of Merit (congratulations to our Committee Chair Dr. Sara) and participation in the Concord250 anniversary parade for the shot heard around the world and the official beginning of the American Revolution. Our Troops are still making history.

March came in like a lion and went out like a lamb . . . well, not really. March was merit badge madness found the Scouts working hard towards earning merit badges both at Troop meetings, with brother Troop 105 of Pembroke, and at Merit Badge University organized by council. Merit badges worked on included the Art, which included a trip to the Museum of Fine Art, Communications (required for Eagle Scout rank), Disabilities Awareness, and several others. The end of March brings plans for West Point and the Concord250 parade in April (stay tuned). Oh, and Molly is about to submit her Eagle Scout project for approval, making her the youngest Troop 1792 Scout to try to earn Eagle Scout rank.

Alot has happened during the shortest month of the year. Five of us completed our Wilderness First Aid certification and shared the skills that we learned with our sister Troop 143. Kayu earned Second Class rank, the Scouts planned which merit badges they will work on in March, and after years of dedication, perseverance and hard work, Mackenzie completed a Board of Review and earned Eagle Scout Rank. Congratulations, Mackenzie! We are all so proud of you!

As Scoutmaster, my goal is to post once a month over the next year to capture the highlights of what we do as Scouts. This month, as we started a brand new year with our sister Troop 143, we enjoyed the magic of winter in New Hampshire - snowshoeing, ice castles and camp cooking made the trip, and the views from our cabins on the lake were amazing! We can't wait for our next adventure!

What a summer! We had a Troop Court of Honor, an Eagle Board of review, a pool party planning meeting, a farm campout (including working on Orienteering and Insect Study merit badges), summer camp, two Eagle Courts of Honor, and completion of a seventh Eagle Scout Service Project. Troop 1792 now officially has six Eagle Scouts, and a seventh Scout only needs to complete her Board of Review. We missed spending time at summer camp with our sister Troop 143 of Pembroke (they went week 1 and we went week 5), but it was a good week even still. We had all active Scouts in camp, and we already have a great year planned with Troop 143 starting with a canoe trip next weekend.

It's been a great couple of months of winter activities! Since the beginning of the year, the Scouts have gone ice climbing with their friends from Pembroke Troop 143, glamped at Joe Dodge Lodge and hiked to Arethusa Falls, and gone skiing at Pat's Peak with our brother Troop 62. It's been fun, but we are ready for spring now!

On February 1st, 2024 Troop 1792 celebrates it's 5 year anniversary. We were the 3rd all-female Troop to form in Massachusetts. We have 4, soon to be 6, female Eagle Scouts, and a 7th will earn Eagle this summer (these young women always reach their goals). We have been on 3 high adventure Scout trips and will be going on another to Florida SeaBase in the summer of 2025 (anyone want to join us?). We meet twice a month, camp once a month, and we help our community whenever we can. We started with 5 Scouts and have 5 now; but we have had as many as 10 and would love to have more people join us on our adventures. It is a great program unlike any other! Thank you to everyone who has supported us over the years! We look forward to what lies ahead!
