Black August in the Park

Black August in the Park "Celebrating Blackness"

08/24/2025

Happy Black August!!
REMEMBER...

As we celebrate our Blackness today, this time is also to commemorate our revolutionary political prisoners and martyrs in the struggle for Black liberation.

Black August was established as a time to:
○Study revolutionary history and theory,
○Fast to discipline the body and honor our fallen,
○Train ourselves for the struggle, and
○Fight with renewed commitment to the struggle.

While Black in the Park reminds us of what we are fighting for, we must also acknowledge that Black August traditions come with political and civil responsibility.

When you arrive at the Park today, grab your “CLAIM” card at the main entrances. You’ll be invited to choose a path that will unlock how you can engage in a real way and also get some free prizes 👀

-Your Blackness is Welcomed

What do we protect? What do we let go?

In our short film Claim, the sale of Grandma’s house forces the family to face that question.

Today, meet Cousin Britt (+ Lil Yali), the path of Safety. For them, Grandma’s house was a place of refuge, where the door was always open and the welcome was unconditional.

As you meet Britt, we invite you to consider:
• Where have you felt truly safe?
• How do we keep those places intact for future generations?
• What does community protection look like in our time?

Your path starts at Black August in the Park this Sunday, August 24th.

Black August is not a celebration...

It’s a tradition born from struggle, rooted in remembrance, carried in resistance.

How will you commemorate it?

from

The All Blacks Parade will open the 10th Annual Black August in the Park — and we don’t just want you to watch.

We want you to join in the New Orleans–style second line, dancing with us, carrying joy through the streets of Durham, and making our way to Black August in the Park at 4 PM.

What do we protect? What do we let go?

In our short film Claim, the sale of Grandma’s house forces the family to face that question.

Today, meet Cousin Quette — the path of Land. He believes keeping the land is keeping the promise — to feed the family for generations, not just for a moment.

As you meet Quette, we invite you to consider:
• What land has shaped you?
• How do we protect spaces that feed both body and spirit?
• What happens when we let go of ground we can never get back?

Your path starts at Black August in the Park this Sunday, August 24th.

Durham — we need YOU this Sunday!
For 10 years, Black August in the Park has been more than a festival — it’s a tradition rooted in Black joy, healing, and honoring Black August traditions. It’s powered by the people, and it only comes alive when we build it together.

Join us as a volunteer.

Do you want to carry the spirit of Black August in the parade?
Do you want to be the first face that welcomes our community into this space of love and connection?
Do you want to help us close the night, holding down the legacy we’ve created together?

Here’s how you can serve:

Parade Marshalls (1–4 PM)
Guide the parade and help us honor the spirit of Black August in motion.

Greeters (Shifts: 4–6 | 6–8 | 8–10)
Be the face of BAP — welcome guests into a space where everyone belongs.

Breakdown Crew (10–11:30 PM)
Help us end the night with strength — lifting, packing, and protecting the space we’ve built.

What do we protect? What do we let go?

In our short film "Claim," the sale of Grandma’s house forces the family to face that question.

Today, meet DeeDee — the path of Art. For her, Grandma’s house was a living gallery — a place of recipes, card games, and songs that tied the family together.

As you meet DeeDee, we invite you to consider:
• How does art preserve memory?
• Where do you go to feel seen and inspired?
• How can creativity become a form of resistance?

Your path starts on Aug. 24th at Black August in the Park

Today, meet Bird — the path of Education. She knows that learning starts in places where we feel seen, safe, and affirmed.

As you meet Bird, we invite you to consider:
• What spaces shaped you?
• Who taught you to see yourself clearly?
• How do we protect those spaces for the next generation?
