We will also have Aerial + Crystal on-site providing socks, underwear, and clothes to those in need. Support their store in downtown Raleigh for your thrifting needs.

According to the National Homeless Coaltion, 70 % of people living outside are elderly & disabled. Iris Canada was a 100 year old Black elder evicted from her San Francisco residence in 2017 where she lived for more than 50 years! She died two days later.

The family policing system also further oppresses poor people. CPS notoriously separates families experiencing poverty rather than providing these families with the resources they need to thrive and prioritizing reunification. Follow Operation Stop CPS Movement for Family Power for more information on demands for local government to invest more resources to support families including the 1 Percent Campaign which demands Durham allocate just 1% of its budget to family preservation and reunification.

In 2024, 38 unsheltered people in Durham died- 22 of them (58%) were Black. The majority of the deaths were attributed to medical reasons. As a remedy, the city allowed Durham employees to hand out tents. So in less than 2 years the city has gone from allowing employees to provide tents to residents forced outside due to the ongoing housing affordability crisis, to criminalizing the very people who rely on them for shelter and using heavy machinery to destroy them. Talk about mixed messaging 🙄.

Report backs from council member Matt Kopac’s community meeting last night indicate homelessness was on top of people’s minds with downtown business owners begging for cops on every corner & lamenting about how scary homeless people are. The poors are ruining the good fun for the downtown gentrifiers. They claim the situation is dire and developers don’t want to build here.

Local, state, and federal policy that continuously prioritizes profits over people is the source of this issue. Land left, resource hoarding, mismanagement, fraud and abuse all contribute. More publicly funded housing is one solution— not building more market rate housing under the lie it will drive down costs. The facts don’t support the continued assertion of the lie of aBuNdaNcE.

The firefighter who was killed putting out a fire earlier this week exposed a deeper, bigger issue that your elected representatives are unlikely to speak about without public pressure.

1.) this fire happened in the area of Durham continuously rezoned and annexed despite lacking the infrastructure to support it. Residents constantly show up to push back on development here citing the fire and EMS shortage that constantly leaves residences in unsafe conditions.

2.) the structure where this fire happened was zoned for commercial yet the property owners were using it as residential rental income. 14 people from a vulnerable community were paying $1,3000 a month to stay in cramped quarters. The Red Cross has put them up for a week but what happens after that week? Will the electeds that were so happy to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month be helping these 14 people?

From homelessness to fires to traffic… this city has blood on its hands. Don’t let them milk that firefighter’s death to keep from addressing the REAL root problem per usual.

A community member named Stephanie Wortham currently held at Durham County jail is being denied lifesaving medication for her chronic illness. The jail is also extremely hot which is exacerbating Stephanie’s asthma, making it harder for her to breathe. Please call the numbers below and demand Stephanie be provided with immediate access to an Albuterol pump for her asthma. The heat combined with her untreated asthma has the potential to kill her.
