Last night as city council approved $17 million in spending on police surveillance tech (yes, it is surveillance tech regardless of what lies Axon or DPD claim) at least 6 unsheltered people (many of them disabled) approached us at The People’s Table asking for support with tents, sleeping bags, and locations where they could safely sleep outside because they are constantly harassed by police for sleeping outside even though they HAVE NO FU***NG HOUSING.

Folks in the community SEE who is doing the work and approach us with vulnerability and in dire need. It says a lot that right outside the halls of power where the folks who work for us make decisions that impact our lives, community members with limited resources are the ones pulling the bulk of the weight around community care. It speaks volumes about where the trust and connections truly lie and I promise you it’s not in city hall or these multimillion dollar non-profits and NGOs. It is with those of us with genuine love and compassion for our people, who don’t reduce folks to their ability to produce labor, and who actually SEE them.

May as well make this the city motto. While the interim chief was saying Durham PD needs drones to show to crime scenes before they do because they don’t have staff, a couple was outside asking me where they could safely sleep because 6 officers regularly show up where they sleep, wake them up and demand they move, harass them for not moving fast enough, etc. Your city council just voted to give slave catchers more technology and weaponized the pain of poor people trapped in the conditions that their policies create who are subjected to violence, making wild assumptions about the people who oppose more police funding and our experience with violence. Many of us have been subjected to r@pe, robberies, gun violence etc. And we STILL know that giving the police more toys does zero to address any of these things. A new slave class is in the making. Trump is a convenient scapegoat but it’s your progressive Dems (actual corporate Dems) making these decisions. They’ve chosen their side. Now what are we going to do about it???

Trigger warning: video contains police violence.

Yesterday in Shelby, NC a police officer repeatedly punched a Black woman in the face, even as another officer tried to pull him off her. A few other officers show up, all demanding she put her hands behind her back. None offering her medical attention.

This brutality and the brutality currently happening at are not isolated & do not demonstrate “bad policing.” This IS policing. It is the very thing policing was designed to do since its origins with slave catchers- uphold the interests of the ruling class by controlling the movement of Black people through brute force. ICE is just an extension of this. If you are not wealthy and white, police in any iteration are NOT going to protect you. When your leaders support more money for police, this is what they are funding. The phrase is ACAB- not “ACAB except for DPD.”

How do we gain community control? How do we protect and defend our own communities?

Durham has a record budget shortfall, 2/3 of which is a result of loss revenue due to property tax appeals by commercial landowners (apartment complexes and office buildings) disappointed in not making the return on investment they hoped for due to high vacancy rates since the rent is too damn high! Residents are footing the bill for private corporations as more wealth is transferred from the bottom up. Meanwhile, $17 million is proposed for more police surveillance technology.

On Monday, June 1 6-8pm come out to City Hall Plaza before public comment on the budget hearing. We will be serving food and sharing pertinent information about the budget as well as other important initiatives. We can also connect you with organizations doing work around some of the most pressing issues facing the city.

We will be collecting canned goods for the Braggtown community fridge inside and food pantries as well as supplies for unhoused residents such as blankets, sleeping bags, tents, flashlights, hygiene products book bags, etc.

Despite record budget shortfalls due to the prioritization of corporate developers and commercial landowners over residents, the City of Durham is committed to pouring more money into police to enhance the Real Time Crime Center they’ve been building behind our backs for years. Slashing city jobs, cutting back services- yet still pouring more money into policing. The messaging is contradictory. If young people are the demographic most likely to be engaged in “violent crime” or victims of it, how does cutting youth programming make sense? No youth job programs. More police to surveil them and throw them in jail. We defeated Peregrine. We must do the same against Fusus, Axon, Flock and all this surveillance technology. It does NOT keep us safe!

Before you judge, get familiar with the details around the situation. As we continue to be inundated with nonstop trauma and abuse of power, with no end in sight, and public officials do nothing but gaslight us and lie, more people are sure to crack under pressure and respond like this out of desperation.

This is untenable. Things are falling apart. People are losing it. And the more folks’ pain goes unheard and unaddressed, the more this is going to happen.

Police body cams DO NOT provide accountability or transparency. This woman has been fighting for 4 years to try to obtain footage from them to see what happened to her elderly mother. And it seems she snapped in waiting.

Braggtown inside has been restocked with carrots, yellow squash, & sugar snap peas fresh from Merrick Moore Community Garden as well as organic pears, and blackberries. There are also several cans of soup, bags of pinto and kidney beans, peanut butter, rice and other canned goods.

Shame on Moore Square Magnet School for making this child and her mom jump through hoops to have an accessible graduation experience. We are still so far behind when it comes to accessibility and ADA compliance. A ramp is a very basic accommodation that should be standard for any venue with a stage. There are companies that rent them as well as wheelchair lifts. It’s not at all complicated when folks care enough to put forth the effort.

Also, a person is not “wheelchair-bound”, they are a wheelchair user. Nobody is “bound” to a wheelchair. A wheelchair is a mobility tool for someone with a physical disability providing them with freedom and independence- not confinement. Please update this article with more appropriate and less ableist language
