North Carolina Folklife Institute The North Carolina Folklife Institute documents, preserves, presents, and promotes North Carolina folk arts and cultures. Smith Reynolds Foundation.

NC Folk could not complete this and other amazing work without the support of the following organizations, and we thank them for their investment in our mission and goals throughout the state. Recent programming has been funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Z. NC Folk is a statewide service organization for traditional arts. This is supported by the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Cultural Resources. Supporting the people's arts since 1974, we connect state folklife with other issues of public concern, such as education and community-driven economic development. What makes a firehouse a firehouse?

Of course, there are the calls. The emergencies. The specialized equipment and skills firefighters train to use.

But there is also everything that happens in between.

Meals around the kitchen table. Equipment checked and checked again. Training. Waiting. Humor. Mentorship. Friendships. Traditions passed from one generation of firefighters to another.

Those everyday experiences have been central to our work with the Greensboro Fire Department, and they are at the heart of the Central Fire Station Historic Photo Exhibit opening this Friday.

Historic photographs from the Greensboro Firefighters Historical Society archives and personal collections offer glimpses into the people who worked, trained, ate, slept and spent countless hours together inside Central Fire Station during its years as an active firehouse.

On Friday evening, those photographs can be experienced inside the building where so much of that everyday life actually happened.

We’re so excited to finally welcome the public into historic Central Fire Station this Friday. It has been a privilege to work alongside Greensboro firefighters to help share the people, traditions and everyday life behind a century of service.

What does it look like when firefighters are invited to share their occupational culture with the public on their own terms?

This weekend at the North Carolina Folk Festival, we got to see it.

Through Inside the Firehouse: Skills, Stories and Service, Greensboro firefighters demonstrated specialized skills and knowledge, talked with audiences about the traditions and everyday experiences of firehouse life, and shared some of what it means to belong to the fire service.

For the North Carolina Folklife Institute, this is what public folklife is about: creating opportunities for people to share the knowledge, traditions and stories of their own communities—and giving audiences a chance to encounter that knowledge directly from the people who carry it.

We're deeply grateful to the Greensboro firefighters, retirees and families who have welcomed us into their world, and to the City of Greensboro Fire Department for partnering with us on this work during its Centennial year.

Thank you as well to the North Carolina Folk Festival and Greensboro History Museum for helping make this public program possible.

What can we learn about a community by paying attention to the traditions of its workplace?

For more than a year, the North Carolina Folklife Institute has been working alongside members of the City of Greensboro Fire Department to document the skills, stories, traditions and everyday experiences that shape life in the fire service.

This weekend, some of that work comes into public view at the North Carolina Folk Festival .

Inside the Firehouse: Skills, Stories and Service puts Greensboro firefighters at the center of the conversation—demonstrating skills they have learned and passed along, talking about traditions and life in the firehouse, and sharing their own experiences with festival audiences.

We're proud to present this program in partnership with the Greensboro Fire Department and the North Carolina Folk Festival as GFD celebrates its Centennial and 100 years as a professional fire department.

What makes a strong Folklife Apprenticeship application?

You don't need to be a professional grant writer to submit a strong application.

Our review panel is looking for meaningful opportunities to pass traditional knowledge from one person to another through sustained mentorship and shared practice.

As you prepare your application, consider:
✓ A strong mentor-apprentice relationship
✓ Knowledge and skills that are deeply rooted in a community, family, occupation, or cultural tradition
✓ Clear learning goals and a realistic work plan
✓ Why this opportunity is important right now

Most importantly, help us understand why this apprenticeship matters to you and your community.

Questions about eligibility, traditions, work samples, or your application? We're happy to help.

In times of disruption and recovery, traditional arts often provide continuity, comfort, and connection.

We're grateful to the Center for Rural Strategies and The Daily Yonder for highlighting the role of ballad singing in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene and the ongoing efforts of singers to sustain this remarkable Appalachian tradition.

We're especially glad to see ballad singers Sheila Kay Adams and Donna Ray Norton featured in the story. Along with apprentice Leila Weinstein, Sheila and Donna participated in the North Carolina Folklife Apprenticeship Program during 2024–25, helping ensure that this rich tradition continues to be shared across generations.

Give the article a read and learn more about how ballad singing continues to strengthen community in Western North Carolina.
