What does it really mean for a world-renowned institution like Duke University to sit at the center of a working city like Durham?

This video breaks down the reality behind the reputation – following the money, the power, and the people who keep Duke running every single day.

From rising tuition and billion-dollar investments to the role of Duke Health as a major economic engine, we take a closer look at how one institution shapes an entire city – and why so many workers are struggling to get by.

But this isn’t just about numbers. It’s about lived experience.

It’s about workers making $19/hour while billions accumulate.
It’s about healthcare treated as profit instead of a human right.
It’s about decisions made by a Board of Trustees far removed from the communities most impacted.

And most importantly – it’s about what happens next.

Enter Durham Rising.

A growing, multiracial coalition of workers, students, educators, union members, and community leaders organizing to hold Duke accountable – and to demand a better future for Durham.

We’re fighting for:
• $25/hr minimum wage and dignified working conditions
• Investment in Durham public schools
• Affordable housing for workers and students
• Strong public infrastructure
• Safety, respect, and protection for our communities

Because the people who make Duke run—and the people who make Durham home—deserve nothing less.

As the largest employer in Durham, Duke has a responsibility to protect its community and become a Fourth Amendment campus.

That means:
✊🏽 No ICE entry into private spaces without a judicial warrant
✊🏽 Clear designation of private areas like dorms
✊🏽 Training for students, workers, and staff on their rights

We are organizing for a campus where everyone is safe, no matter their status.

Kick ICE off campus. Protect our community. We’re on track to win this since 90% of undergrads voted to support this measure recently.

Whose side are you on, Duke? The people of Durham or masked federal agents who terrorize our communities.

We know Duke University has the resources to do the right thing.

We see how deeply Duke shapes life in Durham. And we know that when we raise standards here, it lifts up workers across the whole city.

Right now, in a moment of real fear and attacks on our communities, Duke has a choice: Stand with workers, students, educators, and healthcare providers. Or stand with systems that harm us.

We’re choosing each other. And we’re not backing down.

After decades working at Duke University, now retired worker Ms. Penny knows this: what affects one of us affects all of us.

When ICE came into Durham last year, we saw the fear. It’s a fear we recognize as the same kind many of us have known from police violence in our own communities. It’s all connected.

Duke has the power to take a stand against this harm. And we will not stay silent. ✊🏽

Today, Durham Rising coalition members gathered at Duke University to demand real action to protect our community from ICE.

We’re calling on Duke to take two immediate steps:
🔥 Sign the Fourth Amendment pledge and refuse ICE entry without a judicial warrant
🔥 Cut ties with deportation airlines like Global X

As ICE threats escalate, our communities are living in fear. Duke is the largest employer in the Triangle and with that power comes responsibility.

We are organizing for a campus and a city where everyone is safe, no matter their immigration status. This moment demands action, not statements.

Duke, all eyes are on you.

brings people of all backgrounds together.

But right now, families are being torn apart through deportation flights run by the same charter airlines many universities, like Duke University, use to fly athletes.

Duke acts less like a university and more like a hedge fund. While its Board of Trustees packed with billionaires and multimillionaires makes decisions that shape life in Durham, too many workers are still struggling for living wages, healthcare, and dignity.

We just got Duke to take a small step to support workers by increasing the minimum wage to $20/hour, but it’s still not enough. We need $25/hr. Durham deserves a university that invests in the people who keep it running.
