We’re looking for a part-time (20 hours/week) Camp Coordinator to join our team! 🌳 In this role, you’ll provide daily, on-the-ground support to camp counselors, counselors-in-training (CITs), and campers at our camp locations across Wake, Durham, and Orange counties.

If you love being outdoors and have experience working in a camp or educational setting, this is the opportunity you’ve been looking for!

Today, October 12th, is Indigenous Peoples’ Day. 🧡

Long before Durham, North Carolina, or the United States existed as we know them today, Indigenous peoples, including the Saponi, Tuscarora, Occaneechi, Cheraw, Eno, Shakori, Catawba, and Lumbee, lived on and cared for the lands we now call the Piedmont region of North Carolina.

Today, we honor these Indigenous communities and celebrate their distinct histories, cultures, and deep, diverse, and enduring relationships with the natural world.

Our offices are closed today in observance of Indigenous Peoples' Day.

Talk about a REEL hands-on learning experience! 🎣 Our homeschool group caught this Largemouth Bass at Blackwood Farm Park and enjoyed a firsthand look at the fish’s unique features, such as their prominent jaw, before releasing them back into the water. 🐟

This week at Homeschool in the Wild, we practiced archery, learned how to start a fire in wet conditions, got creative with arts and crafts, and a whole lot more. 🏹

With broken hearts, we share that Penn, one of our Diamondback Terrapins, has passed away. 💔

Penn was not with us for very long, but he quickly captured our hearts. When Penn joined us from the NC State Turtle Rescue Team in July 2026, he had recently been struck by a vehicle, leaving him with a fractured shell and a traumatic brain injury.

Diamondback Terrapins are considered a Species of Greatest Conservation Need by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. Sadly, vehicle strikes are one of the leading causes of death for these turtles.

Penn may not have been with us for long, but he was very deeply loved. We are grateful we had the chance to care for him and provide him a peaceful home after the accident.

Rest in Peace, sweet boy. ❤️
