The Durham Jazz Workshop (DJW) is a non-for-profit, 501c3 organization which provides the Jazz community of the Triangle with educational programs, performances, and special events. The DJW runs classes throughout the year for music students interested in exploring the art of improvisation and to learn more about Jazz.

The best guitar player I’ve heard in maybe my entire life is floating around now, Pasquale Grasso,” Pat Metheny

Born in Italy and now based in New York City, 30-year- old Pasquale Grasso has developed an astounding technique and concept informed not by jazz guitarists so much as by bebop pioneers like Powell, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie and the classical-guitar tradition. His new digital-only EP series, available beginning in June from Sony Masterworks, showcases Grasso in the solo-guitar format, where his intensive studies of both midcentury jazz and classical meld into a signature mastery that is, remarkably, at once unprecedented and evocative. But whom does it evoke? After a surface listen, Joe Pass and his essential Virtuoso LPs might come to mind. Now listen again. He has honed his craft under the tutelage of a number of legendary jazz musicians including extensive study with Barry Harris, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest jazz educators of all time. James’ musical achievements include being honored as a featured performer and semifinalist in the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition.

Songs in the Key of Wonder, James’ debut album, showcases his tasteful instrumental arrangements of a selection of classic compositions from the songbook of the great Stevie Wonder. James also leads the Barry Harris Institute of Jazz (the organization formed to carry on the pedagogy of the late great pianist and educator) and has formed “Luminescence” an ensemble of young jazz lions assembled to celebrate Dr. Harris’ musical legacy. He is known for his lyrical soloing, as well as his steady, yet creative, sense of groove and rhythm.

Ringel earned his BM and MM at the Frost School of Music, where he became immersed in Latin jazz and Cuban music. Since then he has performed and recorded alongside masters of both traditions, including Ignacio Berroa, Aymee Nuviola, Brian Lynch, Shelly Berg, Dafnis Prieto, and Martin Bejerano.

As a composer, Ringel blends jazz sensibilities, rhythmic intensity, and classical vocabulary into compositions imbued with a rich color palette. That voice can be heard on the 2019 self-titled debut of his chamber-jazz quintet Threeplustwo and on Geodesics, the 2020 release from Finnish-American collective Transatlanttiset.

Praised by NPR for music that is “exceptionally groovy” and by DownBeat for “a penchant for elegant melodicism,” Mason has performed as a leader at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Monterey Jazz Festival, SFJAZZ, Ronnie Scott’s, Bimhuis, and Blue Note Milano. His work has also earned a Bistro Award, a Bessie Award, and recognition as a Steinway Artist. Through his independent label, Taylor Christian Records, Mason creates music grounded in melody, rhythm, and collective interaction. His forthcoming album, State of the Art, reunites him with bassist Felix Moseholm and drummer Domo Branch, alongside movement artists Reyna Nuñez and LeAndre Douglas, in a project centered on spontaneity, human presence, and the living connection between jazz and dance.
