Durham, North Carolina Civil War Roundtable

Durham, North Carolina Civil War Roundtable The Durham Civil War Round Table is dissolved, as of 9/15.2016 due to lack of interest and attendanc Civil War and life in mid-19th Century North Carolina.

Around 1985, Jack Schrader and some friends who were interested in the U.S. Civil War started a round table in Durham patterned after other Civil War Round Tables. At the meetings, invited speakers talk about various topics of the U.S. Meetings are open to the public. We encourage people interested in history to join the Round Table. The Durham CWRT meets on the 3rd Thursday of the month, Septembe

r through November and January through May, at 7:00 PM, at the Bennett Place State Historic Site. No meetings are held in June, July, August, and December. Meetings are automatically canceled by severe weather conditions. If the Durham Public Schools close on the day of the meeting, then the CWRT will not meet. Yearly membership is $25 for an individual or for a couple. Renewals are due in January. Dues pay for postage, banking fees, expenses for speakers, and refreshments at meetings. We usually treat the speaker to a meal before the meeting and pay toward driving expenses. Occasionally, a speaker is scheduled who charges an appearance fee.

The Civil War Round Table of Durham is now dissolved.

No one showed up at the meeting on Sept. 15, which further underscores the lack of attendance and interest. After six months, if there is no interest in reviving the Round Table, the treasury balance will be donated to the Bennett Place Support Fund.

Dear Followers of the Civil War Round Table,

The Round Table will meet this Thursday, September 15, at 7:00 PM at the Bennett Place State Historic Site for an important organizational business meeting. This meeting will determine the future of the Round Table.

Attendance has become so poor that holding the meeting is not worth the Bennett Place Staff staying late or invited speakers driving to Durham. There have been talks where the RT Treasurer and I were the only ones there. While our Face Book page has received over 1,000 "likes," only 5 people even paid memberships for 2016.

I suggest a meeting to adopt one of the following proposals:

Discontinue the Round Table. Donate the remaining Treasury balance to the Bennett Place Support Fund. Return the membership fee paid by 1 new person who applied this summer.

Continue the Round Table with current meeting schedule (September - November; January - May). I will resign as President; a new President must come forward.

Continue the Round Table with a reduced meeting schedule (e.g., September, October, March). I would be willing to continue as Round Table president if a reduced schedule is adopted.

Other proposals suggested at the September 15 meeting.

Thank you.

JH

Hey, Civil War buffs,
The movie Union Bound opened yesterday in regular theaters. It is playing at the Regal Cinemas at Brier Creek and North Hills in Raleigh an at the Silverspot Cinema in Chapel Hill. Independent movies like this will not play long. See if you can recognize the historical sites in North Carolina in various scenes of the movie.

Movie Night for the Round Table is postponed. The Civil War movie, Union Bound, was supposed to open at Brier Creek theater this month, but has been moved back to April. When a definite date is given, the Round Table will plan a night out at the movies.

There was a good turnout at the Round Table last night to hear local historian Max Longley talk about famous Catholic converts during the Civil War era. Check this page for info about next month's program. Instead of the usual talk, the Round Table group will get together to go see the movie, Union Bound, which was filmed in North Carolina. More information will be posted later.--J
