Columbus County NC Board of Elections is proposing to cut early voting sites from five to just one.

In 2024, over 70% of ballots in Columbus County were cast during early voting — most at locations other than the one site that would remain. For some voters, that means over an hour of driving just to cast a ballot.

SCSJ sent a letter to the county board of elections today. Community members and voting rights advocates will be at Monday's meeting.

📅 5 p.m. Monday, June 8
📍 Columbus County Board of Elections, 2586 James B. White Hwy N. Bldg B, Whiteville, NC

Columbus County voters could lose access to all but one of their early voting locations if a proposal from the local county board of elections is approved.

For 19 years, Southern Coalition for Social Justice has shown up for communities across the South — in courtrooms and city council meetings, at community events, and in the streets. How we show up has always mattered, and today we’re introducing a new look that finally reflects who we are.

This isn’t about leaving anything behind. It’s about representing the organization we’ve grown into, the work we’ve deepened, and the moment we’re in together. The South is at the center of nearly every major fight happening across the United States right now, and we wanted an identity as clear, as grounded, and as unafraid as the people we work alongside every day.

North Carolina is heating up, with temperatures expected to reach the 90s this week. Knowing the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke could save a life.

Heat exhaustion is your body’s warning sign that it’s struggling to cool down. Symptoms may include heavy sweating, thirst, nausea, weakness, and headache. Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Signs can include confusion, loss of consciousness, hot or dry skin, and a body temperature of 103°F or higher.

If someone is showing signs of heat stroke, call 911 immediately.

We’re joining partners across the country for Heat Safety Week (May 18–22) to share information and resources to help you stay safe as temperatures rise.

Southern Coalition for Social Justice recognizes this week’s federal indictment of Southern Poverty Law Center for what it is: a calculated attempt to use the weight of justice to punish those who demand it.

For more than 50 years, SPLC has done what this work demands, including shining a light on and formally documenting the most violent and extreme hate groups and protecting the very people they target. Their work has saved lives amid countless threats to their own. Now, this administration that pardons insurrectionists and attempts to rewrite the very definition of civil rights, is moving to criminalize the organizations fighting back. SPLC is the latest target, but it won’t be the last.

“This administration wants civil rights organizations to go quiet,” said Ryan Roberson, Executive Director at SCSJ. “We won’t. SCSJ stands firmly with SPLC, and we will keep showing up loudly for the communities who need us.”
