Dear members of our community,

We are so pleased to announce that Durham Volunteer Doulas has merged with MAAME, Inc. for the purposes of strengthening each organization’s work and engagement with our community. Our collaboration and combination will strengthen our work and increase the scope of services, resources, and opportunities for engagement available with our merged organization.

We are now one organization- keeping the name MAAME, Inc. Our mission is to “be the bridge” that closes the gap between the community and systems/institutions that have historically excluded people of color. We recognize and value the birthing people we support and their lived experiences. We are so humbled to be taking this next step and grateful for each and every person who supports us.

✨Happy Juneteenth ✨ Juneteenth 1865, the day a group of enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free from slavery. This was two years after Emancipation Proclamation was signed. “As much as Juneteenth represents freedom, it also reflects how emancipation was tragically delayed in deeper Confederacy” (Fabiola Cineas)

- It’s so easy to lose one self while caring for children. Which is why it is important to remind new parents, there is always a support system behind them.

Y'ALL call you legislators here in NC! Graphics by sistersong. ⁣

HB 453: This is a reason ban, meaning that it prevents abortion providers from completing care if they believe that a patient is having an abortion for a specific purpose- in this case, for the reason of presumed race and/or diagnosis of Down Syndrome of the pregnancy. ⁣

This legislation scapegoats disability rights to attack bodily autonomy- especially since the NCGA is making no moves to support the living & thriving of people with disabilities.⁣

This bill also co-opts language around eugenics- something that NC had active laws in favor of until 1977- and it not a reparations or restorative justice bill.⁣

Fantastic news: Duke Health recently updated its policies to allow non-RN (Registered Nurse) International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) to apply and work for their system!

Why does this matter? Unequal access to higher education has led to disparities in who provides care in our community. 80% of RNs in North Carolina are white. Only 8% of NC RNs are Black. We live in a city where 38% of the population is Black and 13% is Latinx. Unreasonably restrictive and expensive requirements for the IBCLC certification have led to similar statistics in the lactation profession: 90% of IBCLCs are white. Black parents in Durham cite bias from healthcare professionals and culturally incongruous care as affecting breastfeeding outcomes. Hiring Black and Latinx lactation providers is of utmost importance to decreasing inequities in breastfeeding outcomes in Durham.

This is a great step, and we look forward to seeing further steps from Duke Health as they continue to increase access to equitable employment and care in Durham.
