For nearly 30 years, Bull City Fair Trade (formerly One World Market) customers have helped to provide a sustainable source of income at living wages for thousands of fair trade artisans across the globe. Primarily volunteer-staffed, we are one-of-a-kind nonprofit with handmade products from dozens of countries.

If you missed our e-newsletter that just went out, we’re asking for your support in a fundraising campaign to raise $50,000 for our nonprofit over the next four months. We want to keep our doors open to sustain our fair trade mission and keep serving our beloved Durham community. To do so, we need help to pay down debt that we’ve accrued during the financial challenges of the past few years, and to meet operating costs during this slower time of year without taking on more debt.

Our artisan partners hand-knit, hand-carve, hand-paint, hand-weave, hand-throw, and hand-sew authentic art according to cultural traditions preserved over generations of families. No algorithm will ever be able to compete with the skill, cultural knowledge, and creativity that fair trade artists embody to craft the beautiful gifts we sell at our store.

With the goal of improving lives of artisan families in rural India, Mira has turned traditional art into long-term jobs. Using as many recycled materials as possible, Mira artisans craft bells and chimes using techniques passed from generation to generation within their families. The result? Consumers like us in the western market get access to beautiful, culturally inspired decor that empowers underprivileged artisans, especially women and their families.

Today is National Nonprofit Day!
Our store is a 501(c)(3) organization, which means that our daily operations center around our nonprofit mission. Bull City Fair Trade aims to reduce global poverty by providing a marketplace for low-income artisans and farmers to sell their goods, allowing them to earn fair wages while working in safe conditions.
Support for our mission helps us redistribute capital to artisans that face challenges due to climate change, labor exploitation, geographic and social isolation, and imperialist legacies.

As American families prepare for the back-to-school season, we're reminded that education isn't accessible to all. Poverty, sexism, and other external factors leave many children around the world unable to attend school. But, the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO)'s 10 Principles of Fair Trade affirm every child's right to security, education, and play.
We're grateful to work with artisan groups that support the pursuit of education, like WorldFinds Fair Trade. Since 2001, their Girls Education Fund has provided financial resources for tuition, books, and uniforms to the children of their artisan partners.
When you commit to buying fair trade, you help fund education and literacy programs for kids around the world. Fair trade reduces the gender gap in education and, in turn, creates stronger communities for all.
