We are two sessions into our Roots & Resilience Webinar Series!

Disasters don't hit every North Carolinian the same way — and that's the heart of NCDRRN's new webinar series on equity, caregiving, and community resilience.

So far we've welcomed a wonderful mix of caregivers, healthcare workers, older adults, and community advocates, all working to strengthen their own preparedness while learning how to better support the people around them.

Huge thanks to our guest speakers, Audrey Hart (Trillium Health Resources) and Rosalie Calarco (AARP), for grounding this series in the real needs of older adults.

We’re excited to invite all community members to our next Resilience and Roots screening on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, from 6:00–8:00 PM at the KEMBA center at 124 Water Tank Road in Warsaw, NC.

Hosted by the NC Disaster Response and Resilience Network (NCDRRN) in partnership with the Duplin County NAACP, this screening features “Forever Chemicals: North Carolina’s Toxic Tap Water” — a WRAL investigative documentary exploring how decades of toxic chemical dumping contaminated the Cape Fear River and the surrounding air and groundwater, and what it means for the communities that depend on it.
Following the film, we’ll hear from a guest speaker and open the floor for a Q&A session. Light refreshments will be provided — this event is catered!

Resilience and Roots is more than a film series — it’s a space to reflect, connect, and take action on the environmental justice issues shaping our homes, health, and future. We believe informed communities are empowered communities.

Thank you to everyone came out for our screening in November of “The Smell of Money” with Resilience and Roots!

We’re so grateful to everyone in attendance for being willing to build power, together. As part of our ongoing film series, this screening sparked meaningful conversation about environmental justice, climate change, and the industries impacting rural communities across North Carolina.

A special thank you to our panelists, river keeper Kemp Burdette, James Smith and Jessica Thomas of the Duplin County NAACP and Shalonda Reagan from Shackle Free NC, for grounding the discussion in their personal experiences and highlighting Duplin County’s critical role in the the hog industry. Their stories reminded us why community-led action is so essential.

We’re excited to keep this momentum going. Stay tuned for upcoming Resilience and Roots events across the region-and join us as we organize toward environmental justice, from the ground up.

We’re excited to invite all community members to a screening on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at 6 PM as part of our ongoing film series, Resilience and Roots. Following the screening, we’ll host a panel discussion with local community leaders and open the floor for questions and conversation.

Resilience and Roots is designed to raise awareness and spark critical conversations about the intersections of environmental justice, climate change, and disasters—especially how they impact our homes, health, and daily lives. These screenings are more than just films—they’re a space to reflect, connect, and deepen our understanding of the systemic challenges facing rural and frontline communities.

We believe that meaningful change starts with informed and empowered communities. That’s why this series doesn’t stop at awareness—it also offers tangible ways to stay engaged, organize locally, and advocate for just policies at the state level.

Together, we can reimagine systems and push for solutions that reflect our shared values and the future we want to build.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at North Carolina A&T’s campus for an evening of reflection and action! Together, we explored critical environmental justice issues through the powerful documentary There’s Something in the Water by Elliot Page, highlighting the environmental racism impacting communities across Nova Scotia.

The discussion and Q&A afterward were filled with insightful thoughts and inspiring calls to action, thanks to Wesley Morris from Southern Vision Alliance, who shared his experiences in activism and community mobilization. Special thanks also to Terrence Muhammad (TC) from the Hip Hop Caucus for adding his perspective on clean air and water advocacy.

A huge thank you to NC Common Cause for hosting refreshments and the student group Aggies Go Green for showing up and leading the discussion.

This event was a huge success, and we’re excited to continue the momentum. Stay tuned for details about our next screenings —we look forward to building resilience together!

We are hosting a film screening on Friday, March 14, 2025, at 4pm, and we are inviting all community members to attend. We will have a brief introduction from a community leader and answer questions after the screening.

Our film series "Resilience and Roots" is meant to spark awareness about environmental justice issues that intersect with disasters, climate change, and how it affects our communities, homes, and health. We will also offer ways to stay engaged and advocate at the local and state level for system changes that benefit us all. We must prioritize the vision we see for ourselves and collectively address the issues that our rural communities are facing.
