Medicaid is a Lifeline, Not a Luxury

Lori Kelley of Harrisburg, NC, has spent her life working—from running a nonprofit to sorting recyclables. Now, at 59, deteriorating vision and chronic health issues are making it harder to keep a steady job.

New federal Medicaid work rules set to take effect in 2027 could put her health coverage at risk. For Lori and thousands of other middle-aged North Carolinians, Medicaid isn’t just insurance; it’s the only way they can afford the medications that keep them standing.

We need to keep NC Medicaid strong for neighbors like Lori.

Read more about how these changes hit our community:

Republicans have said new Medicaid work rules are aimed at unemployed young people who should have jobs. Policy researchers say the rules are more likely to disrupt coverage for middle-aged adults.

Over the past decade, the veteran population has declined, but the share of veterans with Medicaid has grown.

📈 Thanks to the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid expansion, the rate of uninsured veterans has dropped by more than half — from 6% to 2%.
In North Carolina alone, more than 53,000 veterans are covered by Medicaid.

Expanding access saves lives, strengthens communities, and honors those who served. 🇺🇸
