Last night we gathered at Durham Bottling Co. to celebrate the people who made this year possible: PE teachers, volunteers, school staff, and partners.

Through partnerships with 13 Durham Public Schools, over 1,200 students received pedestrian safety education and more than 2,500 participated in bicycle safety programming this year.

Our ride marshals, event volunteers, and tabling crews kept every group ride and community event running.

One teacher shared a story of watching a student go from afraid to ride to fluent on a bike by the end of the program and how that moment made it all feel worth it.

None of that happens without the people in that room.

Congratulations to Dr. Vanessa Alford of C.C. Spaulding Elementary, recognized as Principal of the Year, and to Dr. Wanda McClain-Daye, recipient of the Caroline Shauger Memorial Teacher of the Year Award β€” named in memory of Caroline Shauger, an avid cyclist whose life was taken by a driver in 2016, and in honor of her daughter Allison, former Bike Durham board chair, who channeled her grief into advocacy for safe streets.

Thank you to Safe Routes To School and Donna Lopp for tremendous support of pedestrian education. And to Durham Bike Co-op. Without them we wouldn't have bikes. They keep our fleet running, support our classes, and provided bike giveaways for schools across Durham.

To every DPS school that welcomed us in and every volunteer who gave their time: Thank you. We can't wait to do it again.

Last Ride Durham of the season.....Don't miss it! 🚲

This Sunday, May 31 at 2pm, join Bike Durham instructors for a guided 5 mile ride through Downtown Durham and along the American To***co Trail, with an ice cream stop along the way.

This class is for folks who already ride confidently and want to build comfort on city streets and multi-use paths. You'll practice scanning, signaling, lane positioning, and more with instructor support the whole way.

Meet us at Recity (112 Broadway St). Bring your bike and helmet if you can. If equipment is a barrier, let us know in your registration.

Thank you to INDY Week and Justin Laidlaw for covering last night's Ride of Silence.

The piece captures the level of community we felt.

From the names read aloud to the togetherness felt riding through downtown and posing in front of City Hall, the energy was powerful. We ride together for safer streets!

Tonight we came together to mourn, remember, and ride in silence for those killed and injured on Durham's streets.

We rode for every person whose family and friends carry that loss every single day. No one in this community should have to mourn alone, and tonight showed that they don't have to.

Thank you to Mayor Leonardo Williams and the elected officials who joined us and spoke. Thank you to Bike Law NC and the Durham Bike Co-op, who rolled up early with their mobile clinic to make sure everyone was road-ready. And thank you to every single person who showed up tonight. The turnout was massive and it mattered.

We're not done. We'll keep pushing for safer streets.

Jack O'Shea, a 15-year-old boy, was killed by a drunk driver while riding his bike home on Cole Mill Road. Barry Vaughn was struck and killed in a hit-and-run while walking on Old Oxford Road.

Every year on the third Wednesday in May, riders in cities around the world go silent at the same time. Tomorrow, join us.

The Ride of Silence is a slow, quiet ride through downtown, all levels, all ages, all welcome. Show up, ride with us, and help us say their names.

This morning, dozens of Durham riders biked to work together for Bike to Work Day.

The conversations along the way said a lot: people love biking to work. It makes them feel good, it sets the tone for their day, and more employers are making it easier with showers and other accommodations.

But we also heard what everyone already knows, that there are roads that still don't feel safe to ride on. We need more protected bike lanes, more connected infrastructure, more options for people who want to commute without a car.

Thank you to everyone who rode this morning, and to Acme Plumbing and the Research Triangle Foundation for making it happen.
