If you are a North Carolina voter, then this November you are going to be voting on whether or not to require the legislature to impose a statewide levy limit on property taxes. This means that the legislature is going to decide how much a county's allowed to charge its residents in property taxes. Supporters of this bill are arguing that this is going to substantially relieve the property tax burden, especially on vulnerable homeowners. We wanted to investigate that claim. To do that, we ran an analysis to determine what would have happened in this last revaluation cycle if this had been in place. What our analysis showed is that if a levy limit had been in place, local governments would have lost about $1 Billion in revenue for public schools, transportation, human services, and more, all while saving the average homeowner only $84/year. The biggest beneficiaries of the levy limit are large corporate landowners such as Duke Energy, Meta, and Google. Check out the full analysis on our website today.
