The Durham Literacy Center is the leading independent nonprofit dedicated to providing free literacy services to adults and out-of-school youth in Durham.

In the midst of Durham’s exciting growth and change, the Durham Literacy Center remains the leading independent adult literacy provider in Durham County, the only community-based organization focused entirely on adult literacy. The Durham Literacy Center …
- Teaches adults to read and write
- Provides English classes for immigrant adults
- Prepares out-of-school youth and adult learners to pass hi

gh school equivalency tests, such as the GED
- Teaches Durham residents basic computer skills
- Provides GED and life skills classes for incarcerated youth at the Durham County Detention Center

The DLC empowers program participants by giving them the literacy skills to improve their own lives and the lives of their families. In turn, DLC graduates empower our community through their productive citizenship. The DLC partners with many agencies, including Durham Technical Community College, Urban Ministries of Durham, TROSA, the Durham County Library, El Centro Hispano and the Durham Children’s Initiative. We’re proud to have been recognized locally and statewide for our high quality programming, strict accountability and solid results. To achieve our mission, the DLC trains and supports several hundred volunteers who serve more than 700 students each year. Over the past three decades, the DLC has helped more than 18,000 residents move ahead.

Today, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.—a leader who believed deeply in justice, education, and service. At the Durham Literacy Center, we continue his dream by empowering adults through literacy and learning. Education is a powerful tool for change, and together, we can help build a more just and equitable community.

As Executive Director, I invite you to honor Dr. King’s legacy today by serving, learning, and uplifting others—through volunteering, supporting literacy, or simply choosing kindness and action.

Durham Public Schools have cancelled classes for Tuesday, December 9, therefore the Durham Literacy Center office will be closed and all classes cancelled. At the moment we plan to open on Wednesday morning at 9:00 as usual.
