Sustain-a-Bull: Shop Independent Durham Sustain-a-Bull is Durham's Independent Business Alliance and a 501(c)3 nonprofit that cultivates a Durham economy anchored in local ownership

Sustain-a-Bull works to build a vital local economy based on independent, locally-owned businesses and helps local entrepreneurs compete successfully against chains, online competitors and others. Sustain-a-Bull unites locally-owned independent businesses, citizens, and community organizations to achieve this goal. We focus on three main areas in our programming: public education about the greater

overall value local independent businesses can provide as well as the vital economic, social and cultural roles that they play in our community; facilitating cooperative promotion, advertising, purchasing, sharing of skills and resources and other activities to help local businesses gain economies of scale and compete more effectively; and creating a strong and uncompromised voice to speak for local independent businesses in the media and local government.

BIG thank you to men of Alpha Tau Omega at Duke University for their efforts and helping us raise funds to help local Durham businesses at this time!

Despite the coronavirus pandemic canceling in-person philanthropy events for Duke’s Greek organizations, their members still found creative ways to raise money for local and national causes.

We know that for every $100 spent at a chain store, an average of $13 is reinvested in the community. For every $100 spent at a local store, an average of $45 is reinvested in the community.

That money maintains our schools, paves our roads, employs our friends and neighbors and makes Durham a wonderfully diverse and interesting place to live.

Sustain-a-bull is the only local organization that solely advocates for local-independent businesses. Choose to support Durham with your dollars, your voice, your vote, and your heart.

The sense of place that we have in Durham – all that makes this place unique – is largely thanks to our local retail businesses. ❤️ Local shops, both service-and product-based, are what build our culture. It’s the places where you can fix a shoe, find the perfect dress, buy a coffee or a new book, and connect with neighbors.

We know that we must invest in what we value, or else risk losing it!
