Our name is derived from a Judy Grahn poem that reads, in part, "a common woman is as common as the best of bread . . . The Chorus began in 1983 as a feminist chorus. We celebrate our heroes, reflect on the personal and political struggles of women and the disenfranchised, and are committed to musical excellence and social change. Membership is open to all woman-identified, gender-nonconforming, a

nd transgender individuals, with a goal of diversity in ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, interests and beliefs.

August is ! National Black Business Month was founded in 2004 to highlight and empower Black business owners all over, especially given the unique challenges faced by minority business owners. Here in Durham, black-owned businesses are an important part of our history. Black Wall Street was a thriving black-owned business district in Durham during the late 1800s and early 1900s, with over 200 black-owned businesses, including banks, restaurants, theaters, and shops.

The prosperity of Black Wall Street came to an end in the 1940s when the city of Durham implemented urban renewal projects that displaced many residents and businesses in the Hayti neighborhood. The loss of these businesses was a major blow to the area, and it never fully recovered.

Today, the Hayti Heritage Center/St. Joseph's Historic Foundation, Inc. is working to revitalize the area and preserve the district’s history. Today is the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. This year’s theme is: “Honoring Indigenous Midwives: Safeguarding Life and Well-being.” The theme aims to raise awareness of Indigenous midwifery as a living Indigenous knowledge system, highlight the contributions of Indigenous midwives to community well-being, and illustrate the challenges they face in maintaining and transmitting their knowledge. It further examines policy reforms and practical pathways for recognizing Indigenous midwifery as critical knowledge systems, and for advancing implementation of related international commitments, human rights obligations and recommendations. CWC recently attended Sister Singers Network Festival in Chicago! Singers spent five days on the Loyola University Lakeshore Campus in Chicago with other feminist and social justice choruses from across the nation to create power in harmony through singing, networking, educational workshops, and more. Sharing community with other choruses is always such a joyous and uplifting experience! 🎶
