Kidznotes catalyzes social change through tuition-free ensemble music education
to 1-12 students in Durham NC

Inspired by the “El Sistema” model of youth orchestras, Kidznotes catalyzes social change by providing comprehensive music education, leadership opportunities, and character-building experiences free of charge to children with the fewest resources and the greatest need. Students attending Durham Public Schools, Wake County Public Schools and several public charter schools in the North Carolina Triangle area who qualify for federal or reduced lunch are the primary participants in the Kidznotes program. During the 2020-21 school year and in the midst of pandemic, Kidznotes matriculated 279 students in programming from Title I schools in Durham, Southeast Raleigh and East Wake County, with two additional pre-K classes in Chapel Hill-Carrboro City schools.

🎶 Meet the Team: ChaKerya Garland!

Sometimes, the welcome you receive stays with you for years. ChaKerya first joined Kidznotes as a Student U intern in 2012. That sense of belonging brought her back, this time as a Program Assistant! 💛

A Durham Public Schools teacher and NCCU graduate, ChaKerya’s love of music began with her grandmother singing and practicing piano for choir rehearsal. Today, she brings music into her own teaching and a passion for helping children learn and thrive to our Kidznotes community.

A fun fact? She’s a huge K-pop fan who has traveled across the country to see her favorite groups! 🎤

A veces, sentirse bienvenida deja una huella que dura años. ChaKerya llegó a Kidznotes en 2012 como pasante de Student U. Ese sentido de pertenencia la animó a regresar, ¡ahora como asistente del programa! 💛

Maestra de Durham Public Schools y graduada de NCCU, descubrió su amor por la música escuchando a su abuela cantar y practicar piano para los ensayos del coro. Hoy incorpora música en sus clases y comparte con Kidznotes su pasión por ayudar a los niños a aprender y crecer.

🎶 Meet the Team: Sophia Lynn!

Our spotlight series continues with Sophia, a Program Assistant who brings a love of music and learning to Kidznotes! 💛

A Duke sophomore originally from outside Chicago, Sophia began playing piano at four and later picked up electric bass and guitar. Her commitment to helping kids learn also led her to start the Illinois chapter of First Readers, connecting children with books and learning resources.

Sophia joined us in August, and we’re so glad she’s part of our community! A fun fact? She loves Tajín so much that she carries a bottle in her purse. 🌶️

Nuestra serie continúa con Sophia, asistente del programa, quien comparte con Kidznotes su amor por la música y el aprendizaje. 💛

Sophia cursa su segundo año en Duke y es originaria de las afueras de Chicago. Empezó a tocar piano a los cuatro años y después aprendió bajo eléctrico y guitarra. Su interés en apoyar el aprendizaje infantil también la llevó a fundar el capítulo de First Readers en Illinois, acercando libros y recursos educativos a los niños.

🎶 Meet the Teaching Artists: Dr. Kenneth Stewart!

A cello can play jazz. A guitarist can explore bluegrass. And a young musician can discover more than one way to make music! That spirit of exploration runs through Kenneth’s work as a performer, composer, and educator. 💛

Our Cello and Composition Instructor brings a love of musical variety to Kidznotes, sharing the many ways music can be created and performed. Born in Texas and raised in Arizona, Kenneth now calls Durham home and holds a PhD in composition.

🎶 Meet the Teaching Artists: Davion Newell!

“Every child can learn; every child must learn.” That belief guides Davion’s work as an educator and musician. 💛

Originally from Jamaica, our Winds/Band Teaching Artist brings experience teaching math and science alongside his love of the flute. He creates a supportive space where students are encouraged to explore their abilities and keep growing.

🎹 Meet the Teaching Artists: Nate Myers!

Music, technology, and a love of teaching come together in Nate’s work! Our Piano Teaching Artist has played since third grade and brings more than 15 years of experience working with young people. 💛

Nate created a music production program at a Raleigh Boys & Girls Club teen center, helping students explore instruments, recording, and audio production. He’s also shared his musical talents with local funk and reggae bands!

Outside the classroom, Nate enjoys golf, reading, family time, and all things Star Wars. Say hello in the comments! ✨

🎻 Meet the Teaching Artists: Elliot Anderson!

At eight years old, Elliot spotted the “big one” in the violin family and was hooked! His musical journey began in a Pittsburgh public school program. Today, he shares his love of the cello with our Kidznotes students. 💛

Along the way, Elliot has performed for Mister Rogers and played in an opening act for Earth, Wind & Fire! Outside of music, he enjoys tending his orchids and garden, caring for his cats, and adding fun stickers to his cello case. Say hello to Elliot in the comments!

🎻 Meet the Teaching Artists: Boyd Gibson!

One violin lesson at sixteen helped shape Boyd’s future. Encouraged by his high school music teacher, he went on to become an educator and composer, sharing his love of music with students from Durham to Kenya and Trinidad. 💛

At Kidznotes, Boyd teaches our Trailblazers Orchestra and Chamber Ensemble, Voyagers String Ensemble, and Upper Strings Sectional. His journey is a reminder of how much a teacher’s encouragement can mean to a young musician.
