Farmer Foodshare

Farmer Foodshare We seek customers who are interested in improving access to and education about fresh food. (Education)

Farmer Foodshare is a Triangle-based food hub whose mission is to increase access to fresh, local food for all and to support the viability of marginalized NC farmers to create an equitable food system. • Donation Stations collect fresh food and funds from farmers’ market customers in order to buy food at farmers’ markets through our “Buy One, Give One” program. 100% of these funds are used direct

ly at farmers’ markets to buy local food from farms. Partner agencies feeding the food insecure come to the farmers’ market to meet the farmers; work side by side with Farmer Foodshare during the food collection and then take the food back to their agency for distribution. (Access/Education)

• The Wholesale Market is a small scale food hub providing affordable local food to non-profit organizations and mission-driven community businesses in the Triangle. This program aims to boost family farm incomes and increase the health of our community, by brokering mutually beneficial transactions between buyers and local farmers/food producers. (Access/Job Creation)

• Food Ambassadors educates consumers and eaters about local, seasonal fresh food. Food Ambassadors seeks to increase the consumption, knowledge, and love of seasonal, local food through outreach and education.

Scenes from our recent participation at the Food Research & Action Center Anti-Hunger Policy Conference in DC and Local Food Lobby Day in Raleigh!

Advocacy is a big part of our mission, and these events were important opportunities to speak about valuable programs like SNAP, WIC, Double Up Food Bucks, SUN Bucks, and FarmsSHARE — all of which benefit families facing hunger and drive economic growth for our local farmers.

We’re grateful for our fellow local food advocates, including NC Food Hub Association, Carolina Farm Stewardship Association, American Heart Association, NC Local Food Council, North Carolina Farmers Market Network, No Kid Hungry, and other NC food system representatives.

Actions like this make change happen in our food system!

About 10-12 thousand acres of North Carolina farmland are devoted to cabbage production, yielding over 70 million pounds each year.

While some crops are available for just a few months, this biennial Brassica is grown and harvested from May to mid-December.

Some of what we have here at the food hub comes from Burch Farms and Moore’s Produce Family Farm LLC where we’re sourcing red, green, and Pointed Head cabbage this season.

Back in January, we had the opportunity to work with about 10 new partner agencies through the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle Resilience Fund Initiative.

These organizations, including recovery housing programs like Healing Transitions, Emmaus House of Raleigh, NC, and TROSA, received fresh produce for dining services and community feeding initiatives.

Our distribution crew took farm fresh food to locations all throughout Raleigh, Durham, and Carrboro — here’s a look at one we took to Grace AME Zion Church.

While the fund came to a close at the end of April, we loved connecting with new food security outlets to get more folks access to nutritious produce!

Today is World Hunger Day.

It’s a reminder that too many people still face barriers to accessing fresh, healthy food — and that solutions require all of us.

Every day at Farmer Foodshare, we connect local farmers with communities — creating a system where both can thrive.

Your contribution today creates solutions that:
🌽 Keep food moving from farms to families
🌽 Support local farmers
🌽 Ensure continued access to fresh, healthy food

Thank you for making this work possible!

Things are looking up! 🪜

Our new racking system has arrived and is already being put to good use. CBG Draft Services came back to help with the install, and we’re glad to be making the most of our new cooler space, especially with high season right around the corner!

Big love to our food hub distribution crew for lifting so many metal beams 💪

We talked about peas in last month’s newsletter, about how the pea plant family (Fabaceae) is 20,000-species strong, how they’re great companion plants, and how springtime in NC means a number of varietals are ripe for the picking.

Sure enough, we spotted a few of these loopy legumes on the Piedmont Farm Tour a few weeks ago at Spring Forest and Urban Community AgriNomics at Catawba Trail Farm. AND they’ve finally reached our availability — 🫛 Certified Organic Garden Peas from Cottle Organics and 🫛 Sugar Snap Peas from Wise farms.
