Jóvenes Líderes en Acción (JLA) is a program of El Centro Hispano creating opportunities for personal and professional development for Hispanic/Latino/Latinx youth in Durham and Orange County. Youth Leaders in Action (YLA) is a community-based program designed to create opportunities for personal growth and development of Hispanic/Latino pre-teens, adolescents, and young adults, ages 12 to 24, and

their families/caretakers. JLA focuses is on enhancing and expanding the capacity of youth, their family/caretakers, and academic entities to achieve improvements in five areas of development: Academic Achievement/College Preparation, Work Skills/Career Readiness, Life Skills/Leadership Development, Social Justice /Advocacy, and Health & Well-being. Through weekly program sessions, monthly activity days, educational forums, service projects, one-on-one case management, and youth councils, participants engage in activities that build their knowledge, skills and networks as well as develop a strong sense community and cultural identity.

With a heavy heart and great appriciation we must announce Cecilia Polanco, our Youth Coordinator, has transitioned out of our organization. She had been with us for over a year and did a fantastic job leading our youth group Jovenes Lideres en Accion. We are sad to see her leave and thank her greatly for her work with El Centro Hispano. This also means we will be searching for a young energetic person to fill her vacancy. Due to the possibility of severe weather and hazardous conditions, Orange County Schools will dismiss 3 hours early on Thursday, September 5th. All after school and extracurricular activities are cancelled for tomorrow as well.

The dismissal times are as follows:
Elementary School- 11:50am
Middle School- 12:35pm
High School- 1:00pm

CHCCS Schools to Close Early on Thursday, September 5

Due to the potential ramifications of Hurricane Dorian, Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools will close three hours early on Thursday, September 5. This early dismissal will allow us to get our student drivers and bus riders safely home, prepare our buildings for any potential wind and rain, and return our employees safely to their families.

We will continue to monitor the situation, and if any changes to the schedule are needed, we will be back in touch.
