CHARLOTTE, NC – Residents from two mobile home park communities in Morganton, NC traveled to Charlotte to picket outside of the offices of their corporate landlord on Friday, July 17, protesting predatory lot rent hikes that will force residents – many of whom are disabled, elderly, and on fixed incomes – to choose between paying rent and putting food on the table.

Corporate landlord Gvest Capital, the owner of MHP Properties, is enforcing extreme lot rent increases across their portfolio, forcing low-income residents and families to choose between basic survival and eviction. Gvest Capital is also withholding titles from many residents who own their trailers, so they could not even sell the trailer and move if they wanted to.

Residents from the Idlewild Acres and Mobile Cottages communities in Morganton came together earlier this summer and got a supermajority of residents at both properties to sign on to a petition demanding a stop to the rent increases as well as a host of other changes in the management and maintenance of the mobile home parks. On Thursday, July 16, Gvest Capital representative Susan Rosenblatt responded to the petition saying that the rent increase is to remain in place.

In response, about 30 residents and supporters traveled directly to Gvest Capital’s corporate office in Charlotte to protest outside of the building. Susan Rosenblatt came out to speak with a delegation of residents and their NCTU representative but refused again to meet their demand of stopping the rent increase.
