Last week, several tenants working with Triangle Tenant Union came to Durham City Council's work session to share their experience with landlords that are neglectful or purposefully imposing slum conditions to further gentrify housing and raise rents. Thanks to their efforts, Durham is putting a strong ordinance up for a vote at the next general meeting on October 20 at 7PM.

This ordinance will make it a violation of Durham code for landlords to collect rent on housing that presents a threat to resident safety, including exposed wiring, rotted floors, pest infestations, blocked exits, and lack of heat & potable water. This gives tenants more standing to confront landlords, defend against unfair evictions, and advocate for themselves.

TTU continues to organize a support campaign for the ordinance, including chances to testify before city council about what it's like to live in unsafe rental conditions and an easy way to message city council members. Follow and message for more info.

Durham tenants working with are organizing to convince City Council to amend city code and make it harder for neglectful landlords to impose unsafe housing on their tenants. If you're in Durham, you can attend or stream today's work session to hear our testimonies in favor of a strong ordinance. Check out our story for an easy way to message the mayor and councilmembers, as well as the opportunity to keep up the fight as we head into a final vote.

Victory in Winston-Salem! A month-long campaign by NCTU affiliate Housing Justice Now has won free bus service for residents during extreme heat and cold weather! The Winston-Salem Transit Authority began offering it on July 25th, and under pressure from tenants across the city, City Council made it a permanent policy at their August 4th meeting. Organizing gets the goods, y'all. Join Housing Justice Now one of our other local NCTU affiliates!

Over 80 NC counties are under extreme heat advisory. Dan Rose of NCTU explains why we're fighting for transit justice and why free bus service needs to be part of the response in Winston-Salem and other communities!

Sign the petition in our bio and stories. While heat index values reach 107°F this week, many residents cannot get to cooling stations or other places they need to go due to lack of bus fare. We demand free Winston-Salem Transit Authority (WSTA) bus service during this extreme heat.

BIG WIN FOR WINSTON-SALEM TENANTS: Kevin Cheshire is resigning! The registered Republican who lives in the Triangle has been HAWS' general counsel for 12 years and executive director for 5 years. He has ignored needed public housing renovations while pouring millions into the HAWS office building, underutilized Section 8 vouchers, bungled a $30 million Choice Neighborhoods grant, pursued retaliatory evictions, and pushed through a meaningless rebrand of the agency. Tenant organizing at Crystal Towers, Healy Towers, Cleveland Avenue, and across our city made it impossible for Cheshire to push through even more bad policies. Make no mistake, this resignation is an organizing victory! And we demand the next executive director be truly dedicated to low-income housing!

Just a reminder that evictions don't magically slow down on their own. The people fought for and won protections from HACA and other landlords after the storm. And we're gonna keep on fighting!
