Keep Durham Beautiful Durham volunteer-powered nonprofit reducing litter, planting trees and native plants and supporting environmental stewardship. Keep Durham Beautiful, Inc.

Affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, partnering with City and County of Durham. (KDB) is a nonprofit, volunteer organization working in partnership with the City of Durham’s General Services Department and the County of Durham to bring private businesses, residents and community organizations together to conserve and enhance the appearance and environment of Durham through litter cleanup events, beautification projects, tree planting, pollinator gardening, and educational activities.

Our Invasive Plant Removal (IPR) Program was recently recognized as a 2026 Outstanding Project in Urban Forestry by the North Carolina Urban Forest Council. In 2026 so far, we've hosted 58 volunteer invasive plant removal workdays to remove invasive plants from our local parks and public spaces. These IPR events would not be possible without the tireless work of our outstanding volunteer leaders Julie d’Ablaing, Peter Schubert, Megan Brame, Steven Feuerstein, Shelby King, and Greg Van Stekelenburg. 🌿

You can join us for an IPR event soon! This coming weekend we'll be at Cornwallis Road Park on Friday and Saturday and the following weekend we'll be at Briggs Avenue Preserve. You can learn more and register for these events at keepdurhambeautiful.org/events!

The rain might have slowed us down, but it definitely didn't stop us! We had another fantastic week of Big Sweep with amazing volunteers removing litter all over Durham.

In our second Tree Keeper training this past weekend, attendees learned more about tree care and got some hands-on practice with pruning! Tree Keeper volunteers help us care for and teach other residents about our urban trees. 🌳

If you're interested in becoming a Tree Keeper in the future, you can sign up for training announcement and related updates on our website, or join us for a Tree Keeper Social on Tuesday, October 13. This event is for current Tree Keepers as well as those who are itching to get involved but haven't yet had the chance. This event is following the last Tree Keeper class of the season, so it will also be a great place for new folks.

We gave away 24 trees this weekend at the at the Jubilee Home Block Party. These trees will be planted by residents in the area helping to grow Durham's urban tree canopy. An expanded canopy has benefits for all residents like lowering heat in the surrounding areas, helping clean our air and water, lowering energy bills, and improving physical and mental health.

Keep an eye out for all our upcoming tree events at keepdurhambeautiful.org/events and durham-trees.org.

Of the trees given away, 19 were grant funded. Funding for this project is provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, in partnership with the City of Durham. These institutions are equal opportunity providers.

These amazing volunteers are the folks that keep on keeping Durham beautiful! We had so much fun last week showing our gratitude for all the hard work and dedication of our volunteer leaders at our Volunteer Appreciation Party!

Last week was the first session of Tree Keeper Training! Across three sessions, participants learn the basics of tree planting and care, and prepare to lead small groups in tree plantings as a Durham Tree Keeper. Tree Keeper volunteers help us care for and teach other residents about our urban trees.

Tree Keeper Training is done in collaboration with N.C. Cooperative Extension, Durham County Center, Keep Durham Beautiful, and the City of Durham. It is led by Extension Horticulture Agent, Ashley Troth with assistance from KDB staff.

It's tree time! 🌳 Last week, we did tree maintenance along Blackwell Street with an amazing group of volunteers from NCCU who helped to prune and mulch 28 trees. We also had a (very rainy) tree giveaway in the Ellis Community where we distributed 15 trees to residents. 🌧️
