September 20 - Raising a Child with ADHD :: ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental issues adoptive parents face. ADHD is very common in the foster, kinship, and adoption communities. This support group looks at what exactly ADHD is and the different options for treatment. We also provide a list of tips to help parents raise a happy, successful child with ADHD.

👉🏼This series is created by the Creating A Family training and tool kits.
👉🏼Each Support Group session can be counted toward 1.5 training hours in Durham, Wake and Orange counties.

Virtual Support Meeting March 15th: Managing Expectations

One of the biggest reasons placements fail is because of a mismatch between the parents’ expectations about fostering or adopting and the reality of it. This support group looks at how these unrealistic expectations can interfere with our ability to see and parent the child we actually have. We will take a quiz to determine our child’s actual age vs their physical age. Lastly, we will look at how parents can manage their expectations and what they can do to take care of themselves.

Introducing the Fostering Families Mentorship Program!
We're matching experienced foster and adoptive parents with other resource parents who may need support.

We believe that parents connected to community members with experience in the foster and adoptive care system has a multitude of benefits, including increased retention of available foster homes, enhanced child safety and well being, increased stability of placements, and increased successful reunification of families with children in care.

And, yes, we know - foster and adoptive parents are very busy! We’ve designed monthly prompts that can help both mentors and mentees quickly hone in on topics that matter with a simple phone call. Fostering Families will email a prompt reminder to all mentors and mentees at the first of each month. Just click on the link, call your mentor or mentee, and read your month’s prompts to discuss.
