Becoming a U.S. citizen is already a significant commitment. A new DHS proposal could make the process even more expensive by increasing naturalization fees by up to 80%, eliminating the reduced-fee option for low-income applicants, and ending most fee waivers.

These changes have not taken effect. This is a proposed rule, and the public has an opportunity to submit comments before a final decision is made.

If you believe these proposed changes could create unnecessary barriers to citizenship, now is the time to make your voice heard. The public comment period is open through August 24, 2026.
