How I went from 0 gigs to performing live daily to meaningful audiences..
I remember talking to a friend who was in school for music at the time and feeling jealous at his opportunity to be in music school. I asked him, “Do you think I should apply for music school?” and he followed up with another question, “What do you want to do?”
I said, “Perform.”
Then he said, “Go book a gig.”
Was it really that simple? Did he see something in me that I didn’t see?
I knew I was pretty good, having played music for over 25 years at the time, but was it really that easy? I also knew that I wanted to make an impact and change lives. I, having overcome many challenges through music, wanted to give back and play for people who I thought really needed it
I picked up the phone and googled the closest retirement home to me. I spoke to the operator and I asked her if they ever needed live music and she said. “One moment, I will transfer you to our Activities Director.”
And 5 years later…
I run 3 successful businesses bringing music to healthcare and beyond. I play almost daily for people that really need it with a roster of over 30 musicians, 6 hospitals, and countless retirement homes.
I am thankful that I didn’t enter a music school and listened to my friend.
Practicing gratitude and realizing a young musician's dream is worth more than any dollar amount.
Thank you,
