The Durham Art Guild

The Durham Art Guild Nonprofit member-driven visual arts organization serving current and future Durham and regional artists and art enthusiasts.

Established in 1948, the Durham Art Guild (DAG) is one of the oldest non-profit, member-based visual arts organizations in the U.S. The DAG is located within the Truist Gallery at the Durham Arts Council Building in downtown Durham. We are a separate organization from the Durham Arts Council with a unique mission and objectives. We program and operate 2 visual arts gallery to showcase the work of

regional artists. We offer education, professional development, and increased visibility for members. We create community partnerships to increase awareness of, and appreciation for the arts. The DAG programs quality year-round exhibitions, which are accompanied by public opening receptions during Third Friday Durham each month.

Let's welcome Anthony Garza to DAG's Board of Directors!!

Anthony is a Durham, North Carolina–based photographer whose work explores human connection, cultural identity, and the power of visual storytelling to strengthen communities. Blending documentary realism with intentional portraiture, his photography honors everyday individuals as bearers of culture, resilience, and shared experience. Garza’s work is rooted in empathy, collaboration, and a deep belief in art as a tool for social awareness and inclusion. His recent DAG exhibit, "Lotería: A Photographic Study of Contributions to Our Community", reimagined a beloved cultural game as a living portrait of Latino and multicultural contributions, celebrating dignity and belonging across generations.

Shaped by a life of service, including 14 years in the United States Air Force and a myriad of experience working in manufacturing, banking, retail, and academia, Garza brings discipline, respect, and purpose to his artistic practice. He currently serves as Business Manager for the Air Force ROTC program at Duke University, where mentorship, leadership, and community engagement continue to inform his creative approach.

Garza is married to his wife, Liz, whose support and partnership are central to his work. At home, he shares life with their two sweet pugs, Angus and Daisy. Deeply committed to the arts, Garza looks forward to helping the Durham Art Guild continue to grow as a vital force for the arts in Durham, the Triangle and beyond!

"I’m honored and excited to join the Durham Art Guild Board of Directors. The arts have shaped my life and my work, and I believe deeply in their power to connect and uplift our community. I look forward to collaborating with such an inspiring group of board members to strengthen the Guild, expand access to the arts, and help creativity continue to thrive in Durham."

Welcome to the Board, Anthony!!

We Want Your Ideas!

We welcome you to dream up workshops, classes, and creative spaces you’d love to lead through Durham Art Guild. Have a skill you’re excited to share? A process you want to demystify? A space you wish existed when you were starting out? We want to hear about it.

Artist-led programming is at the core of what we do. Your ideas help shape how our community learns, connects, and creates together. Whether that looks like hands-on making, thoughtful conversation, risky experimentation, or something beautifully unexpected. Members only, rolling deadline.

"For me, a juried show is about cultivating a dialogue. This exhibition also posits a call to action, asking visitors to reflect on what catches your eye and speaks to your soul – please take a moment to linger there. My hope is that these works also invite the vital curatorial voices we rely on to continue to offer the context that mediates these important artistic voices and the work they create. I look forward to the Durham Art Guild continuing to platform artists, curators, and the community in this important dialogue." - Colony Little

DAG Members Critique on Saturday, January 24th, 2026 in the Truist Gallery from 11am-1pm!

Exclusively for DAG Members - Join other DAG artist members for a friendly artist critique ,with artwork in any medium/style that you're currently working on to gather feedback, support and suggestions. Come join us and make your mark!

Featured Moderator this month is artist Hunter Hadley. Hunter describes himself as a mark maker. Marks and images made by hand are a language that offers sensory and emotive threads that are deeply human. Why is it that we are fascinated by handprints on cave walls found from around the world? It is because we have all made that mark; that being a declaration of self.

Critique Topic Directionally, where do you see your work in your current practice and what do you want to accomplish with it in 2026? Bring 2 current works completed, and or works in progress within the last 12 months. 3D artists must bring the actual works - no pictures!

"Among these works there are tensions and expressions of oppositional forces, both theoretically and in materiality. Some grapple with and express our environmental, social, and political climate, while others celebrate healing, relishing in the quotidian and joy as an act of resistance and self-preservation." - Colony Little
