Golden Leaves & Lava Trails: Day 2

12.2.2020

Taking you on the journey of how this vision came to life...

Alberta’s Homeplace is more than a community—it’s a revolutionary act of reclamation. A place where Black single mothers and their children can heal, grow, and build the future they deserve. A place where mothering is celebrated as sacred and transformative, where the earth is honored as a teacher and healer, and where collective care leads to personal and communal liberation.

This dinner gathering will build on our previous event, where we highlighted the power and presence of Black single motherhood, exploring how it has supported our families, communities, and the nation. We recognized the political strength that comes from being a single Black mother.

Looking ahead, we will meet on Saturday, November 9th, from 5 to 7 PM. Regardless of the election outcomes or who holds office at the local and national levels, we will unite to discuss our next steps. In the meantime, I encourage you to read Dani McClain’s book, “We Live for the We: The Political Power of Black Motherhood” as it will be a valuable resource for our gathering on 11/9. This will be offered in a hybrid format, with both in-person and virtual options for those unable to attend in person. Please RSVP at [email protected] for more information.

Are you a Black single mother? We welcome anyone who identifies as Black, female, and has experienced single motherhood, whether with young or adult children. This space is intergenerational. If you are a single mother who has recently partnered but primarily identifies with the experience of Black single motherhood and wishes to connect and help nurture this vision, please reach out to me at [email protected]

Our ancestral mothers turned to the moon for guidance and reflection on various aspects of their lives, from agriculture and cultural practices to understanding the self. On November 1, we will honor this connection and initiate our new moon and full moon gatherings for our community.

This will be a healing space that incorporates embodied practices, writing prompts, and intention-setting focused on self-care. This will be offered in a hybrid format, with both in-person and virtual options for those unable to attend in person. Please RSVP at [email protected] for more information.

Still basking in the joy from this past Sunday’s “On My Mama” launch event for Alberta's homeplace! We had a beautiful time creating flower crowns, dancing, enjoying double dutch (lol), playing with hula hoops, and even having an “On My Mama” soul train line. It was a true celebration of Black joy!

During our gathering, we talked about the power and presence of black single motherhood, discussing how it has nurtured our families, communities, and the nation as a whole. We acknowledged the political power inherent in being a single black mother.

Looking ahead, we will gather on the Sunday following the election, November 10th. Regardless of the outcomes or who holds office at the local and national levels, we will come together to discuss our next steps.

In the meantime, I encourage you mamas to familiarize yourself with Dani McClain’s book, “We Live for the We: The Political Power of Black Motherhood,” as it will serve as a valuable resource for our November gathering. Stay tuned for more details!
