Dear HSA Families,
As most of you know, Hillandale Sports Association has been serving northern Durham children for over 40 years, and it has been a pleasure seeing those children learn and grow in sports and succeeding in life.
HSA has always been a program built, run, and financed by our community. It is hard to come by a Northern Durham resident who hasn’t had some experience with HSA. It takes lots of volunteers, many hours, and a community that supports you to pull off the sports we have offered.
Over the last ten years or so, the entire HSA organization has been run by a very few volunteers, and the last 5 years there have only been just a handful of us managing soccer, baseball, basketball, track and trying to kick off flag football. COVID was very hard on our sports community and since then we have really struggled to get anything accomplished. We cannot manage operating this organization with only a few people. This is the reason we are writing today.
It is with a sense of sadness that we’ve decided to stop all sports outside of soccer. The remaining volunteer board members have struggled with this decision as we are all passionate about providing access to sports for our community, but even with multiple requests over the years, we have been unable to get enough people to help. Managing HSA programs like this has become unsustainable. Having affordable, accessible recreational sports is a very important component of a strong community. It is our sincere hope that there are parents out there that want to pick up this torch at some point and carry on the great offerings that have always been part of HSA and our North Durham community!
Effective immediately, basketball, track, and baseball will no longer be offered through our organization. Soccer for Spring and Fall will continue to be supported and run through NCFC.
