On June 16th, 1944, 14 year old George Stinney was sentenced to the electric chair on false charges for the murder of two white girls, becoming the youngest person ever executed in 20th century America. A shameful 70 years after his death, Stinney was finally exonerated.
Stinney’s ex*****on has lived on in the memories of activists, educators, advocates and researchers, and was a driving force behind the creation of our Youth Decriminalization Report. American history is rife with examples of youth of color being traumatized and dehumanized by racial violence. Our landmark report highlights the consequences and the alternatives to youth criminalization, and how to make sense of a centuries-long legal system that is predicated on harm.
Today we remember George Stinney, and the countless other young Black and Brown children who continue to stare in the face of injustice. Our goal -with this report and all of our work- is that our young ones are allowed to live freely.
