The disruption in SNAP benefits is an act of neglect that disproportionately harms Disabled people, Chronically ill people, and our Elders. It’s the predictable result of a system divesting from equity and justice. Disabled people already face the highest rates of food insecurity and the most barriers to access: income caps, physical inaccessibility, unreliable transit, cost of medicines, therapies, and care, and isolation.
This is going to mean skipped meals in already compromised bodies. This is going to mean choosing between food and needed medicine. This is going to mean the prescriptions that are required to be taken with food will have nothing to go down with and foods that regulate blood sugar may not be in the pantry. This is a removal of dignity. Too many folks, with SNAP in place, were only surviving. The disruption to SNAP, for many, is a threat to life itself.
CANDOR // Part & Parcel has also always worked alongside other food justice organizers in Durham. Since the closure of the community fridge, we have expanded our network and built new partnerships with the intention of redesigning the ways we engage in the work of knowing and feeding people, centering relationships, interdependence, and sustainability. What we have been building we are now expediting.
We’re aiming to:
At Part & Parcel:
Distribute $50 gift cards on behalf of donors to SNAP recipients who want to shop with us
Be a pick up site for free, ready-to-eat meals for SNAP recipients through partnerships, with a goal of distributing 250 meals in November
Be a drop-off collection site for donations to Feed Durham
At the West End Free Market:
Double the amount of food we are able to distribute on each market date
Provide prepared meals for families to take home through a partnerships, with a goal of distributing 1000 meals
Provide a hot meal on-site, prior to market opening
At CANDOR Farm
Build out more infrastructure through the winter to be positioned to grow more food in our spring season and beyond
WE CAN ONLY DO THIS THROUGH COMMUNITY DONATION
