Bull City Woodshop What we offer:

After School Program:
Geared towards students in grades 3-12. Workshops:
Planned and offered to adult groups.

The Bull City Woodshop is a youth centered organization that guides individual development, fosters community connection, and cultivates creativity through woodworking. Founded in 2021, The Bull City Woodshop was created to empower youth in their abilities through woodworking education and mentorship.

Our goal is for every student who enters the program to leave The Woodshop with an increased confidence in their own abilities to be a successful and contributing citizen to our community. Our goal is to provide high quality woodworking instruction which will prepare participants to enter higher education or a skilled trade with confidence and resources. At the end of each workshop, participants will take home a completed project that they have built in the Bull City Woodshop. (Cost paid by participant based on the project selected- profits from this program will aid in funding the after school program)

Big shoutout to one of our newest volunteers, Sierra! Sierra works as a project manager for an interior construction company and spent much of their 20s and 30s working in production woodshops. After spending their workdays at a computer, they are excited to put their talents back to work, be around fellow makers, and lend a helping hand in our community. We are so thrilled to have them bring their passion and shop experience to Bull City Woodshop!

Big welcome to our newest NCCU Social Work Intern, Jared! As a veteran, student, and aspiring social worker, Jared joined us to dive into the world of woodworking and work alongside local youth. Though he’s brand new to the craft, he is eager to learn the ropes and support the shop behind the scenes. We are so grateful to have him on board as part of something bigger than ourselves!

A majority of Durham's bus stops have no shelter, and nowhere to sit. People wait there standing, every morning and evening.

So we started building. Twenty-five of us cut and drilled and assembled through a couple of ice storms, and on February 4 we loaded five benches into a pickup and drove them out to stops around Durham. The first went in on Rigsbee Avenue that morning. Two men were sitting on it, waiting for the Route 4, later that afternoon.

Forty-nine benches are in the ground now, every one built by hand by a volunteer. We want to put 240 more out there over the next two years.

Susan and Michael Hershfield are matching every new gift through November 30, up to $37,000. A bench costs about $300 to build, install, and keep in repair. With the match, $150 puts one at a stop.
