This weekend, as part of the U.S. government’s response to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, FHI 360’s EpiC Project sent the first of two shipments of personal protective equipment to support safe and dignified burials in the Ituri Province.

These materials are essential to protecting community members and frontline workers during burial ceremonies, when the risk of disease transmission can remain especially high.

The supplies also help burial teams honor local traditions and uphold the dignity of those who have passed, which is critical to building trust and cooperation within affected communities.

With funding from the U.S. Department of State, this work supports urgent efforts to contain the outbreak, protect communities and reduce the risk of further spread.

“A long-acting [TB] medication will only work if people are willing to take it,” says FHI 360 Scientist Lara Lorenzetti.

The current treatment for TB — the world’s deadliest disease — is inadequate. Around the world, treatment adherence is a challenge. A long-acting TB treatment option would be easier to follow, increasing the number of people who complete treatment.

In this Q&A with Lara, learn about the market research that FHI 360 is conducting to understand the preferences of patients and health care providers when it comes to a hypothetical long-acting injectable TB drug. 💊

With funding from the U.S. Department of State, FHI 360 is supporting the Ebola outbreak response in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda through STRIDES and the EpiC Project. These two global health programs can be activated quickly to support urgent response to contain the outbreak, protect communities and reduce the risk of further spread.

Working alongside national governments and global partners, our teams are helping strengthen infection prevention and control, support case investigation and contact tracing, enable safe and dignified burials and move essential supplies to where they are needed most.

This work helps affected countries contain the outbreak, protect communities and reduce the risk of further spread.

By combining human expertise with innovation, we’re making diagnosis faster, more accurate, and more accessible. 🌍

Finding more people with TB requires high-volume screening — at both health facilities and community mobile health events. Now, AI is helping radiologists interpret chest X-rays, improving accuracy and reducing fatigue.

Since 2022, our U.S-funded Support to End TB team in Viet Nam has used AI to read more than 100,000 X-ray images, ensuring people with TB are identified even in lower-level facilities with fewer trained staff.

👩‍⚕️ “I read the chest X-ray first, without looking at the AI result. Then, I look at the AI reading to compare… It helps me to improve when I see abnormalities the AI identified.” — Dr. Mang Thi Thu Nhung

“I learned not only soapmaking but other life skills,” says Yessa, a mother living in a camp for displaced people in Nigeria’s Borno State. Yessa participated in a program led by FHI 360’s NE-CORE project, which is funded by the U.S. Department of State, that taught her how to generate an income and save money. “Within three weeks, I could produce soap on my own.” 🧼

After the workshops, some participants establish small businesses selling soap, mending clothes or knitting garments — selling their wares at a local market. Yessa put her share of the profits from the group’s first batch of soap toward buying livestock.

She now runs her own business and invests some of her income, helping to build resilience for her family.

“I want people to understand that you are not your worst decision,” says Sean Brailsford. Incarcerated during some of his formative years, Sean now stands as a pillar of hope for young people navigating their own challenges.

Sean is a project manager for the Compass Rose Collaborative, FHI 360’s network of employer and community partners which serves as the foundation of our work with justice-impacted young people ages 18 to 24. He oversees programs across five sites in Arkansas, Florida, Maryland, Texas and Washington, D.C.

Sean’s journey shows that second chances matter. His leadership and mentorship give young people the opportunity to rewrite their own stories, just as he did.

Reentry programs like Compass Rose Collaborative, led by FHI 360’s National Institute for Work and Learning, support people reentering society with skills and resources to attain — and retain — employment.

FHI 360 is excited to serve as the evidence partner to the The LEGO Foundation and BRAC on their program advancing play-based learning and early childhood development for children living in crisis-affected settings in Bangladesh and Uganda.

Together, this collaboration aims to reach 400,000 children in refugee and host communities in Cox's Bazar and the West Nile — creating spaces where children can play, learn, and build resilience.

In both countries, FHI 360 will conduct rigorous evaluation of BRAC’s Humanitarian Play Lab model, contributing to an adaptive, evidence-driven approach that strengthens responsive caregiving, supports children’s wellbeing, and informs how play-based interventions can deliver impact in humanitarian settings.

In close collaboration with BRAC, the partnership will also generate implementation research to understand what works, for whom, and in which contexts — helping to strengthen programming and contribute to global learning on education in crisis contexts.
