Midtown Housing Coalition

Midtown Housing Coalition Housing is Healthcare Our Vision -
To establish an affordable neighborhood of 20 to 24 tiny homes with a community center.

Our mission is to support intellectually and developmentally disabled individuals, disabled veterans, and first responders in Durham and the Triangle with affordable housing that’s safe, inclusive, and tailored to their unique needs. There will be space for outdoor activities such as a gazebo, a bbq grill, and garden areas. The community center would conduct programs of interest to everyone in the

neighborhood. Some of the proposed activities would include but not limited to; exercise classes, dance lessons, cooking classes, movie night, dances, and holiday parties. People from surrounding communities would be invited to join.

Heads Up: Humana “Special Needs” Advantage Plan Warning

If you have a Humana SNP, double-check how your spending account actually works.
I enrolled my son (IDD diagnosis) in Humana’s National Medicare HMO/SNP (H1036-NC) with a $355/month spending account. After multiple calls, Humana told me:
• IDD (Autism, Down syndrome, etc.) is NOT considered “Special Needs”
• Only chronic conditions like heart attack, diabetes, stroke qualify
• His $355/month could be used only for OTC items — not food or utilities
A Humana rep explicitly said my son did not qualify as Special Needs under their plan.
I switched to UnitedHealthcare, which does recognize IDD and allows spending account use for food and utilities.
Important: You can change Medicare Advantage plans until March 31, 2026. No changes after that.
Bottom line:
• Humana excludes IDD from “Special Needs”
• Spending account severely restricted
• Other insurers do better
• Complaint filed with NC Insurance Commission
• Congressman notified
Please check your plan carefully.

This is my personal experience with Humana from last week, Feb 2-5, 2026
