Today may be the last day of May, but supporting mental health, strengthening families, and building thriving communities is a commitment that lasts all year long.

At Families & Communities Rising and Fcr Head Start, we know that mental wellness is connected to strong families, healthy relationships, stable communities, and access to support when it’s needed most. Every day, our programs work alongside children, families, caregivers, and communities to create opportunities for healing, growth, connection, and hope.

As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, let’s remember that checking in on one another, seeking support, and caring for our well-being doesn’t end when the calendar changes.

Families & Communities Rising and FCR Head Start & Early Head Start brought the community together for an incredible day at the Family & Community Fest. From games and activities to valuable community resources and family engagement, this event was a reminder that strong communities are built when families feel connected, supported, and seen.

At FCR, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to grow, thrive, and succeed, and every family deserves a community that rises with them.

A special thank you to our amazing community partners, volunteers, board members, staff, and supporters who helped make this event possible. Your presence, partnership, and commitment continue to strengthen families across Durham and beyond.

Congrats Shanti Bose, LCSWA...we are so proud of the work that you are doing at KidSCope and how you are working every day to change the lives of families in our communities.

We are excited to share that our Director, , has been recognized as a 2026 40 Under 40 honoree.

The Triangle Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 Leadership Awards recognize executives, directors, and C-suite leaders across the Triangle who are creating meaningful impact through innovation, leadership, and engagement. Since becoming Director in 2023, Shanti’s leadership has helped expand KidSCope’s early childhood mental health services through culturally responsive programming, nature-based healing initiatives, family wellness events, and advocacy efforts centered on the needs of children and caregivers. Her vision continues to strengthen KidSCope’s commitment of building spaces where children and families can connect, heal, and grow together.

Reflecting on her work in the Triangle, Shanti shared, “I grew up in the Triangle, and in the late ’90s, I was one of those kiddos who would have greatly benefited from culturally attuned therapy and support for my family, which at that time didn’t really exist. It means a great deal to me to now be part of creating inclusive therapeutic spaces for children and families across the very communities that shaped me.”

Shanti also shared, “This recognition is truly a reflection of the entire KidSCope team whose dedication, compassion, and steady commitment continue to support children and families every day. I especially want to recognize Candace, Kelsy, Leilany, Nia, Sara, Susan, and Yolanda for the intention, integrity, and purpose they bring to this work.”

Supporting healthy children starts with strong community partnerships and education

Families & Communities Rising and FCR Head Start & Early Head Start recently hosted an HSAC (Health Services Advisory Committee) meeting focused on promoting children’s oral health and hygiene.

While brushing twice a day is essential, conversations also highlighted the important role nutrition and healthy eating habits play in preventing cavities and supporting overall wellness.

HSAC is a key part of Head Start and Early Head Start programs, bringing together parents, educators, healthcare professionals, dental providers, nutrition experts, and community partners to help guide and strengthen services that support children and families.

Through collaboration, education, and advocacy, HSAC helps ensure children have access to the resources they need to grow up healthy and strong.

Healthy smiles begin with healthy habits!
