Book Harvest A home library for every child.

Book Harvest works to realize a world of literacy and justice for all—a world in which every child grows up with an abundant home library from birth and with a love of books, reading, and learning, and every parent feels supported, celebrated, and affirmed in their role as their child’s first teacher. Since 2011, children and families have harvested more than 2.5 million books to build their home libraries and to ensure that parents have the tools and power to ignite and strengthen their children’s literacy. With programs that are grounded in evidence, Book Harvest believes that literacy starts at birth, in the home, powered by parents, and nourished with books.

Big news for Books for K!⁠

For the first time ever, Books for K is going districtwide in Durham Public Schools. From October 5 through October 30, all 32 DPS elementary schools will host Books for K, giving approximately 2,300 kindergartners the chance to choose 10 brand-new books to take home and keep forever!⁠
⁠
That’s more than 23,000 books heading into children’s home libraries across Durham this month.⁠
⁠
Students will choose from a wide range of high-interest titles, including bilingual English/Spanish books, and every book includes a QR code connecting families to reading tips and resources to support shared reading at home.⁠
⁠
We’re so excited to celebrate this historic milestone with Durham Public Schools and help make book ownership part of the kindergarten experience for every child in the district.⁠

What makes a baby’s first library so special?

The 10 books in our Books from Birth starter home library are an invitation to look, touch, sing, move, talk, and connect from day one.

From bilingual books and familiar rhymes to Look, Touch, Learn: Sky, a board book intentionally designed to make tummy time more engaging for babies. Each title creates new opportunities for babies and caregivers to explore the world together.

In our latest blog post, we’re taking you inside the Books from Birth collection and sharing the thoughtful details behind the books families bring home with their newborns.

Big news for North Carolina families.

With support from The Leon Levine Foundation, Book Harvest and Smart Start are bringing books and family supports to newborns in Wayne, Robeson, and Scotland counties, with a fourth county coming soon.

Families will receive a 10-book Books from Birth starter home library at the hospital, a monthly book from Dolly Parton's Imagination Library until age five, and parenting tips from The Basics Insights. That's up to 70 books in a child's first five years.

Our goal: make book ownership from birth part of the standard of care for every family.

Thank you to our partners at Smart Start, The Leon Levine Foundation, UNC Health Wayne, UNC Health Southeastern, Scotland Memorial Hospital, and the local Smart Start partnerships for making this happen.
