By: Matthew Bahnimptewa
Come join us March 7th, 2026 in the Student Union at Fort Lewis College to celebrate pueblo culture with an amazing indigenous keynote speaker, workshops, vendors, dance groups, a throw, and can’t forget, a feast!! This event is open to the public so bring your friends and family, as we get together to retell stories and keep our knowledge alive.
Artist note: Lolomay (Good things) I am Patkiwungwa, water clan, from the village of Hotevilla. I took inspiration from my Hopi culture and this years theme. We as pueblo people have a deep connection to the land that surrounds us. We know where to hunt, forage, grow, and pray, and this is what western society calls Traditional Ecological Knowledge, but for us is just living. Growing up in the culture showed me that western ways of knowing and what we know are no different. What we were oppressed from doing is now being recognized as an alternative to climate action. It’s important to retell these stories and remember where we come from to ensure our cultures continue for future generations. In this piece I hoped to use bright colors to emphasize the richness of our cultures, and the colors of our directions. I wanted to echo a theme of continued resiliency and prosperity as we continue to shape our futures. Kwa’kwaii
