Thank you to the Jackson Mountain Ramblers for an incredible evening of live music, and to everyone who came out to learn more about the Upper San Juan Watershed Education Program. We’d like to welcome our new 2026 CAUSE intern, Marley Huwer to the Community Foundation.

Marley has lived in Durango her entire life and attends Durango High School. She is involved in DECA where she stands as the District 10 State Officer for Colorado DECA. Outside of school Marley enjoys spending time on the lake, golfing, traveling, and playing soccer. When she is done with high school she plans to study business by majoring either in International Business, Entrepreneurship, or Marketing.

Marley’s role within the Community Foundation is to create a Colorado Gives Campaign, create and refine CAUSE marketing tools, work on a marketing campaign and so much more. With the support of her new AI skills she learned through the CAUSE training she is properly equipped for the tasks.

We can’t wait to guide her through her internship and see the great work she will produce!

The CAUSE internship started this week! We partnered 11 students up with 11 amazing nonprofits to support them in their 2026 Colorado Gives Marketing Campaigns. Throughout the month of June our talented interns will attend marketing classes, analyze their nonprofits brand, and create beautiful marketing material. They have been equipped with three new AI trainings to teach them how to ethically use AI for their time ahead. We can’t wait to see what these interns produce this year to support their community!

The CAUSE (Community Action Utilizing Service Experience) Internship began in 2021. This incredible opportunity came in order to offer high school students valuable, hands-on experience while giving nonprofits support in marketing their incredible work for Southwest Colorado Gives Day.

Nonprofits involved receive more than just a helping hand and marketing support, they receive $2,500 to support their mission. These paid interns will produce work that benefits their nonprofit and receive a competitive, full-time hourly wage.

School is out, and to kick off the summer the Foundation's SPUR Fund directed grants to summer youth programs across Southwest Colorado. From Dove Creek to Silverton to the Ute Mountain Ute Nation, all with one thing in common: making sure working families have access to affordable summer care for their kids.

A huge thank you to the Virga Foundation for partnering with us to bring additional support to Montezuma County this quarter. Have a great summer!

Today's insight from Briggen centers around myths about nonprofits, and how these misconceptions can hold our organizations back.

Myth #1: A good nonprofit should eventually support itself
Myth #2: Anyone can write a grant
Myth #3: A nonprofit with savings is doing something wrong
Myth #4: Low overhead means a good nonprofit
