Durango Kennel Club (DKC) is a group of passionate, fun dog lovers with members from the Four Corners area who own purebred and/or mix breed dogs and share an interest in canine activities and welfare. We are licensed under the American Kennel Club (AKC). DKC offers an array of activities, including hosting a 4-day all-breed conformation show in May, an agility trial in August, training lasses tw

ice a year and Canine Good Citizen and Therapy Dog Testing. All breeds are welcome and you do not have to have an AKC registered dog to participate. We meet at the La Plata Fairgrounds at 7 pm on the first Thursday of each month (unless otherwise noted on the News page). Please enjoy exploring our site. Plan to attend our fall specialties on Halloween Weekend at Loretta Park in Bernallilo, NM with the Sandia Shadows Cluster (October 30-November 1, 2026) in the lovely park with grass and trees with great views of the Sandia Mountains. There will by three days of Sporting Dog Fanciers of New Mexico shows with Sweeps each day and Beginning Puppy and two days of Weimaraner Concurrent Specialties on the weekend. We typically have beautiful autumn weather. Judges for the Specialties: Gloria Kerr and Mary Napper. We hope to see you there! Contact Holly McKnight-Nelssen for more information.

It's official. The Treeing Walker Coonhound is the state dog of Kentucky!

Here are three facts you may not know about these smart and sensible dogs:

* They’re known as “the People’s Choice.” There are many different coonhound breeds, but the Treeing Walker has been referred to as “the people’s choice” among coonhounds. Many hunters think these dogs are the best for competitions because they are more “hot-nosed,” meaning they will abandon an older scent trail for a fresher one, resulting in more catches.

* They are one of six coonhound breeds. We recognize five Coonhound breeds, including the Treeing Walker. Others include the American English, Black-and-Tan, Bluetick, Plott and Redbone Coonhounds.

* They’re ‘treeing’ experts. The term “Treeing” in their name comes from the hunting method where dogs chase animals up trees. Dogs don’t climb the trees – they force animals to climb them. This allows their hunters to take a better look at their game and inevitably, catch them. Sometimes these were raccoons, but sometimes also bigger game.

⚓️ Our newest Mussel Dogs have officially been certified and are hitting the field this weekend. Today marks Dinghy’s very first operational deployment, helping protect our waterways from invasive mussels. ⚓️
