Looking ahead two weeks out, on September 15 our speakers will be Caroline Kinser and Mike Todt from the Neighbors in Need Coalition (NINA). They will provide an update on NINA as an organization and its funding of the Emergency Warming Center. Mike Todt is the volunteer leader of the warming center and we’ll learn about its history and what's upcoming for this coming winter.

Caroline is originally from Memphis, TN and later lived in Winston‐Salem, NC where she was involved with a Homeless Ministry for 20 years. Having relocated to Durango over 20 years ago, she has served on the boards of Manna, Durango Friends of the Arts and La Plata County Historical Society; and the Vestry of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. In 2019, Caroline and others founded NINA and she serves as Board Chair.

Mike is a retired clinical psychologist and former CEO of two psychiatric hospitals. He is a past board member for both Manna and NINA and does volunteer work at Fort Lewis College and outreach at Manna. His career also includes teaching history at West Virginia University and as an executive coach to Fortune 500 company executives. His passions include time with his wife Tammy, biking, hiking, and traveling.

On Tuesday September 8, come listen to speakers and Kim Martin and Kimberly Schooley speak about Living Well With Dementia & the Durango Dementia Coalition. This will be from the perspective of someone living with dementia and a care partner.

Kim Martin has had an extensive teaching career and as a paralegal. She taught Asian History, Comparative Cultures, and Composition at Fort Lewis College. Kim was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease and mild cognitive impairment in July of 2022. She writes a regular column in the Durango Herald about her journey, which has won two state-wide journalism awards, and she has been an integral part of creating the Durango Dementia Coalition.

Kimberly Schooley has been an attorney, teacher and full-time care partner for her husband, Dr. Alan Schooley, a pediatrician who was diagnosed with Young Onset Alzheimer’s Disease in November of 2020 at the age of 51 and then later with Posterior Cortical Atrophy. Alan passed away on New Year’s Eve in 2024. Kimberly is the Vice President of the Durango Dementia Coalition.

On Tuesday September 1, our club will meet at the Manna facility to conduct our normal meeting followed by a talk and tour of the Manna facilities.

Speaking will be Co-executive Director Marissa Hunt and perhaps other in key Manna staff positions.

There will be no livestream so do come to receive a valuable update about Manna. Visitors to our meeting are welcome.

Manna’s Mission is to provide, in the spirit of faith and love, nourishing meals and supportive services in an atmosphere of acceptance and caring for those in need.

On Tuesday August 25, come listen to speaker John Angst who is a morning Rotary club member. He will tell us all about Organ Donation. As Mick is in need of a donor organ himself and is listed on the National Donation Website, he has much information to share about promoting organ donations which fall in line with Rotary's Service Above Self motto and improving the lives of others.
