Geoff Johnson is one of the most cast actors in our area, and he generously gave us his audition tips. Take it from a pro and give these a try. Thanks, Geoff!
Audition Tips:
1) Be as prepared as possible:
a. Memorize your lines perfectly.
i. Have them memorized several days in advance
ii. (Last minute memorization is sure to trip you up)
b. Practice your monologue, song, side etc. repeatedly
c. Practice your slate (Your name, what you are presenting)
d. Perform your audition for other people to help work out nerves.
2) The day of the audition
a. Plan your day like it is a performance.
i. Stay hydrated
ii. Get enough sleep
iii. Make sure you have something to eat but plan a meal that will support your audition and not weigh you down.
b. Determine what you will wear to the audition
i. How formal is this audition? Should you dress up?
ii. Is there a dance element? You need to be able to move!
c. Make sure you have water
d. Bring a copy of your monologue, song, side etc.
e. Bring a copy of your schedule from now until closing of this show.
f. Do you know these people? Doesn’t hurt to bring a resumé and head shot!
g. Plan to be early! No need to add to the stress of the experience!
3) At the audition
a. Be yourself! (You know, the fun, cooperative, likable version they’ll want to cast).
b. Have fun!
i. The more you focus on having fun, the easier it is to forget how nervous you are.
ii. Don’t be afraid to make bold choices.
c. Meet new people: introduce yourself.
i. Everyone is nervous.
ii. This can help ease your nerves while also making a good impression on the production team.
4) After the audition
a. Don’t stress. You’ve done all you can do!
b. Try not to be impatient with the casting decisions (impossible I know).
