In the event of a winter storm, Durango School District works closely with transportation staff, the Office of Emergency Management, CDOT, and other local partners between 4 and 6 a.m. to assess road conditions across our 1,100-square-mile district.
On Tuesday, Feb. 17, a two-hour delay was called due to high winds and snow in outlying areas of La Plata County that created whiteout conditions for bus drivers. While there was only sleet and rain at lower elevations in Durango, road conditions in other parts of the county were unsafe for student transport.
On Wednesday, Feb. 18, after the same early-morning collaboration, roads across the district were determined to be safe for travel despite active snowfall. Snow totals and road conditions varied significantly by elevation and location, resulting in a mixed picture across the county.
Our primary determining factor is the ability of bus drivers to safely transport students across the entire district — not conditions in one neighborhood or at one elevation.
We understand that winter weather can change quickly. Conditions this afternoon may make for a slower and more challenging commute, particularly at higher elevations. Families should use their best judgment regarding travel during any weather event.
We are aware that emotions are high and that some misinformation is circulating. The district does not control weather patterns or individual driving decisions, and we cannot predict hour-by-hour snowfall changes. Our focus remains on student and staff safety.
Additional winter storm patterns are possible over the next two days. We will continue to monitor conditions closely and communicate any changes promptly. We appreciate everyone’s patience, flexibility, and commitment to student safety during unpredictable winter weather.
