Look what we are up to now. Yeas we have raised the money to complete the baggage car and to bring over the Refrigerator car and put on static display. What next NRMI?

A remarkable photograph depicting the former Ann Arbor yard and main thoroughfare through Durand, circa 1965.

This vantage point is comparable to the view seen from the sidewalk between baggage car 8812 and the newly restored crossing gate tower in Iron Horse Park today.

Finishing touches being made on our three year restoration of the former Gate Tower in Iron Horse Park! It’s been a lengthy process, but we hope that folks will think that the effort has been worth it.

As a recap, the following happened during the course of the restoration:

- All rotted wood removed and replaced
- Door replaced with more original style five panel wood door
- All windows, frames and trim completely rebuilt to original specs
- Interior tongue and groove wood taken down to bare wood, repainted in original grey scheme
- Interior steps repaired and rebuilt
- All exterior siding replaced with correct style clapboard: original pieces milled into mementos and used to help pay for restoration

We thank all of those who helped with this effort, and hope that you will continue to support NRMI’s effort to honor those who worked for our nations railroads.

This album documents the move and ongoing restoration work to GTW #206447, a refrigerator car built in 1954 by Pacific Car & Foundry. After nearly four decades surviving as storage for a chicken rendering facility in Holland, Michigan, in 2017 the car was saved through the efforts of the late Chad Thompson, and moved to Port Huron. In the Spring of 2023 the car was donated to NRMI, and efforts are now underway to move it to Durand. Stay tuned!
