A CGE delegation led by Dr. Carolyn Bishop and Dr. Ian Cosh recently visited Northrise University in Ndola, Zambia in central Southern Africa. The visit centered around the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Aikins Family Engineering Classroom Building which will house the new College of Engineering for Northrise.
Founding president Dr. Moffat Zimba and representatives from the Education Authority of Zambia emphasized the need for skilled engineers born and educated in their own country who can move the nation beyond one that has historically supplied minerals and other commodities for export. Northrise Initiative chairman, Dr. Ian Cosh likened the addition of the new school of engineering to the “planting of trees under whose shade one never expects to sit.” Mr. Joseph Aikins for JTAM Engineering concurred in his remarks about future generations that will be affected.
During the visit, Dr. Pat Taylor, retired president of Southwest Baptist University spoke to faculty members on the topic of the integration of faith and learning in an institution like Northrise that was established 20 years ago as a Christian university. Dr. Bishop and Dr. Cosh then led a panel discussion to allow faculty to express themselves and question the visitors on this and other topics.
The delegation also visited Mercy House, a program founded by Doreen Zimba to teach life skills to at risk young women and equip them with knowledge and hands on experience in running a small business when they complete the program.
Northrise University is the first member of the Consortium for Global Education in the entire African continent.
