🧡It’s International Raccoon Appreciation Day!🧡

Every year, October 1st serves as a day to appreciate an often misunderstood & under appreciated creature- RACCOONS❣️

Curious & clever, these little souls bring so much love, laughter, and purpose into my life. Watching them grow, learn & love one another is one of my most favorite parts of being a rehabber. I’m endlessly grateful to be a part of each & every one of their journeys.
These masked bandits have completely stolen my heart (along with my chapstick & keys a few times😂)!

Raccoons play a very significant role in our ecosytem:

🌱 Natural Pest Control
Raccoons help control insect and rodent populations.
They eat beetles, grubs, wasps, mice, and even small snakes—keeping those populations in check naturally, without chemicals or traps.

🌿 Seed Dispersers
Raccoons eat a wide variety of fruits and berries.
As they travel, they spread seeds through their droppings, helping new plants grow and supporting forest regeneration.

🐚 Aquatic Ecosystem Health
When foraging along creeks, rivers, and shorelines, raccoons eat aquatic invertebrates and crustaceans, which helps prevent any one species from becoming too dominant and throwing the balance off.

🧼 Nature’s Clean-Up Crew
Raccoons are scavengers, meaning they help clean up the environment by eating carrion (dead animals) and leftover food sources.
This helps reduce the spread of disease and keeps natural spaces tidier.

🦝🧡🦝💛🦝🧡🦝💛🦝
At Maleena’s Wildlife Rescue, we work year-round to rescue, rehabilitate, and release these incredible animals—and it takes LOTS of
time, love, supplies, and community support to do it.

If these little bandits have ever made you smile, please consider donating to help us continue this work. Every dollar helps cover food, medication, enclosures, and the many little things that add up to a second chance at freedom. 💛

One entire week. That’s how long these poor babies were without their mama, without milk, without anyone to care for them. All alone, trapped in the walls of an attic- for a week. Imagine the stress, the fear and the hunger these two innocent babies faced.
A week prior, their mama had been trapped and taken away. No one realized she had babies tucked away in the attic.. until they heard the noises. Desperate for help, the babies scratched at the walls.
Luckily for the babies, they were rescued by an ethical wildlife removal company, who wanted nothing more than to save them. They called around to ALL the rehabbers in their area. No one could take them. They began extending their search, nothing. Everyone was full, closed to intakes, or simply didn’t answer.

I know, I said I was closed to new intakes a few weeks ago, and Lord knows my plate is full, but my conscience wouldn’t let me say no to them. When another rehabber reached out to me asking if I could take them, and explained their story, my heart spoke before my brain could think.. “Sure.. can you bring them to me?”

Getting them stable and caring for them throughout the winter will keep me busy but I follow my heart’s lead.. Tonight, they’re safe, their bellies are full, and my heart is happy.

Mother Nature has given up on seasons & has decided to produce babies nearly year round. Two of the youngest babies I’ve ever taken in this late in the year..

Baby boy: 1.3 lbs

Would anyone be willing and able to pick up a 4x8 wooden cage for me located in Chesterfield VA and bring it here to the rescue in Tappahannock VA?

It’s heavy (approx 300 lbs) so it would probably take at least a few people to load/unload?

‼️I don’t mind giving money for gas and time if needed‼️

This cage would be a huge benefit for us!

Life can change in a flash. Sometimes it takes just one moment to remind us how fragile life truly is and that tomorrow is never promised 💞

Yesterday started off normal but in less than 5 minutes everything changed…

Today, I’m holding the people I love a little closer and feeling especially thankful—not only for those I love, but for those who love me in return.

Never miss an opportunity to say “I love you.” Hug a little tighter, forgive a little quicker, and cherish the time you’re given. Tomorrow is never guaranteed. 🙏🩷

This Sunday (Sept 6th) would have been my Maleena’s 18th birthday🎈

For those who don’t know the story behind the name of the rescue, Maleena wasn’t “just a dog” or simply a pet.

She was like a daughter to me.

Born with special needs, caring for her consumed my days and nights. My life revolved around making sure she was safe, comfortable, cared for, and most of all, knowing just how deeply she was loved.

When I lost her, a piece of my heart left with her. She’s one of those losses you don’t “get over.” You simply learn how to carry them.

For me, one of the ways I’ve learned to carry that loss is through Maleena’s Wildlife Rescue.

All of the love I had for her needed somewhere to go, and somehow it found its way into every orphaned baby, injured animal and frightened little life that comes through my doors needing someone to fight for them.

Saving these animals will never replace Maleena or take away the pain of losing her, but it does help ease that pain. It gives me a reason to keep her memory alive and a beautiful way to honor her.

And all these years later, I still get to say her name every single day.

Her name has become associated with compassion, second chances, and hundreds of animals who were given the opportunity to return to the wild. I don’t think I could have ever imagined that when she was here beside me.

So this Sunday, rather than letting the sadness of another birthday without her consume the day, I want to celebrate her life and the legacy that grew from loving her.

… so, I thought of ..

🩷 18 FOR MALEENA 🩷

In honor of what would have been her 18th birthday, I’m hoping to find at least 100 people (out of 15k+ followers) willing to donate $18 to Maleena’s Wildlife Rescue.

All the funds donated will help me purchase food, medical and enclosure supplies needed for the babies being kept over winter and the injured animals coming in during the fall & winter months. They will also help get a head start on purchasing supplies needed for the babies coming in spring of 2027.

If $18 isn’t possible, any amount means just as much. You can also share this post, leave a 🩷 or 🐾 below, or simply do something kind for an animal in her memory.

Because ultimately, this isn’t just about raising money. It’s about her-

One very special four-legged soul who was loved beyond measure.
That love became a legacy.
That legacy became a rescue.
And because of her, hundreds of animals have been given a second chance so far!!

💝Happy Heavenly 18th Birthday, Chugas 💝

You are still loved beyond words.
You are still missed every single day.
You will forever be mama’s bestest buddy in the whole wide world.

Thank you SOOO much to everyone who has sent such kind messages after I posted about not feeling well. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate everyone taking time out of their busy days to send sweet messages and healing thoughts.

I’m home and feeling better. I’m not back at 100% yet, but I’m hoping once I rest a little more and finish the antibiotics I’ll be ready to roll again.
I don’t like sitting in the house doing nothing. Working on things outside, cleaning & organizing the rescue buildings and just staying busy in general is how I like to spend my days and late nights.
The heat has taken a toll on my body this summer .. and as much as I hate to admit it, I’m not a spring chicken anymore. Until fall weather comes, I’ll need to convert to vampire mode and stay inside as much as I can while the sun is up. A good thing I ordered a number of solar lights to install so I can get things done after the sun starts & temps drop.

Thankfully, my Lyme disease test came back negative. Still waiting on a few other bloodwork results. I have an appointment to visit my allergist to have a “tolerance” test done in regard to my Alpha-gal disease (I was diagnosed nearly 4 years ago). The ER Dr seems to think my body may be responding to an allergen making me feel like crud (in addition to the heat exhaustion, dehydration and UTI). I’ll post an update after those results come back. I believe sharing info on such an awful “new” disease can help others learn and stay healthy.

Again, thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for all your thoughts, prayers and kindness. I never expected to have such a response to that post, I just wanted people to know why I wasn’t responding to wildlife calls & that I was closing to new intakes for a while.

I’m extremely grateful for all your support.

With much love & appreciation,

Sharon

To those who have called, texted, or messaged me throughout the day and haven’t gotten a response,

I’m sorry.

For the last few weeks, I hadn’t been feeling well so I finally decided to go to my local Urgent Care Center earlier today (my primary care didn’t have any available appointments). Within 10 minutes of talking to the Dr, they sent me directly to the ER. I was there for hours getting fluids & antibiotics through an IV and having numerous tests, imaging & bloodwork done.
I didn’t feel like returning every call/text and honestly, I still don’t, so I’m hoping this one post will be a sufficient response to all.

- Heat exhaustion, dehydration, and a urinary tract infection. Waiting for test results regarding Lyme disease and thyroid issues. I need to follow up with my primary care for an alpha-gal re-evaluation to see if my numbers have changed since I’ve been bitten by numerous ticks throughout the summer.

Please note:
I’m closed to new intakes for the next week or two. Once I’m feeling more like myself again I’ll make an updated post. For now, I need to focus on the animals I have currently in care and getting myself back to healthy..
