Help Us Uncover History! 🌟
The owners of 628 Wilkie Street uncovered this old photo and are excited to share it with us! 🚗✨Their thoughtful renovation of this charming 1925 craftsman-style bungalow is near completion, carefully revitalized to preserve its original architectural character. It also backs up to a coveted and historic alleyway, a unique feature of this blossoming area of historically designed landmarks.
Formerly known as the Mease Nurses Home, this house stands as a testament to the Mease family's unwavering dedication to Dunedin. Dr. Jack Mease, born on an Indian reservation in Utah, moved to Dunedin, Florida, in 1926 with his wife, Gladys, and their young family. Drawn by the town's excellent drinking water and the need for medical professionals, he quickly established a successful practice.
In 1937, with community support and his life savings of $7,500, Dr. Mease built Dunedin Hospital, a 19-bed facility. The hospital was constructed during the Great Depression, employing residents paid in cash and medical credit. For 50 years, the Mease family dedicated their lives to the hospital and the residents of Dunedin.
The owners are seeking a Dunedin Historic Landmark designation to commemorate Dr. Mease's significant contributions to the community and celebrate the home's architectural style. On the recommendation of the City of Dunedin and the Historic Preservation Advisory Committee, their application has moved forward for presentation to our Dunedin Commission at next Thursday's meeting for its 1st of two readings.
Let's bring this piece of history to life together. Do you recognize the person in the photo? We would love to hear any stories you might have about the Mease family or this beloved property. Your contributions are invaluable in preserving our community's rich history!
